Czech artist Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) created this work during his final visit to America. The painting is a straightforward personification of the holiday spirit, reflecting Mucha's observations of Czech immigrant communities successfully maintaining their heritage abroad.

While still containing elements of his signature Art Nouveau style, the composition is simple and calm. The female figure, embodying the spirit of Christmas, wears a dress with Czech floral patterns and holds symbolic objects from a traditional Czech Christmas feast.
