#Abass_Alavi_MD_receives_2017_ACNM_Gold_Medal_Award

#Dr_Abass_Alavi, is a #Professor of #Radiology and #Director of Research Education at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine.

His lifetime contribution to the field of #nuclear_medicine and #molecular_imaging, especially translating and advancing the clinical impact of #FDG_PET/#CT, has improved the health care of millions of patients worldwide over the last two decades.  Together with chemists at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Dr. Alavi, #David_Kuhl, and Martin Reivich were the first to introduce #radioactively labeled glucose as fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (#FDG) and #Dr_Alavi to a human subject in 1976 and make #tomographic_images of the brain by a homemade single-photon emission tomography (#SPECT) machine and planar whole body images by a rectilinear instrument. His group pioneered #PET_imaging of the normal brain and disorders such as #dementia, #stroke, #glioma, #schizophrenia, and #brain_trauma.   He also has been quite instrumental in advancing applications of #FDG and other #PET tracers in assessing numerous malignant and benign disorders.

His contributions are unparalleled in the field with an academic record of more than one thousand peer reviewed publications, 50, 000 total citations, #3000 citations annually. He delivered hundreds of invited lectures, trained countless young #nuclear_medicine #physicians from worldwide and held NIH peer reviewed funding for decades. More importantly, his philanthropic contributions to the field are exemplary including Alavi – Mandel award for scientific contributions to the journal of nuclear medicine by trainees in basic sciences and clinical programs, Alavi-Mandel #Award Fund for Subnoscription to Journal of #Nuclear_Medicine for medical libraries in the developing countries and ACNM Alavi International visiting professorship to India.

For his selfless lifetime contributions to promote the field of #nuclear_medicine and #molecular_imaging in the United States and the world, and for building many #nuclear_medicine physician careers, it is ACNM’s great #honor to award the 2017 Gold Medal to #Dr_Alavi.

After preclinical studies at New College, he trained as a clinical #neurologist at St Thomas’s Hospital, London, Leicester and #Oxford. He was appointed Fellow and Tutor in #Medicine at Magdalen College in 1970. Now Emeritus, he still teaches #neuroscience a bit, and he lectures frequently to Schools and Societies on why #neuroscience is so interesting.

His research focuses on how vision controls movement in animals, patients with #movement_disorders, #dyslexic children and #antisocial_offenders. He collaborates with #neurosurgeon, #Prof_Tipu_Aziz, on deep #brain stimulation for movement disorders and pain, with #Dr_Sue_Fowler on #visual_dyslexia, and with the Institute of Food, #Brain & Behaviour on the influence of nutrition on behaviour. These studies have led to novel approaches to treatment, such as deep #brain stimulation of the #pedunculopontine_nucleus for #parkinsonian freezing and falling, blue and yellow filters for #visual_dyslexia and omega 3 fatty acid supplements for #antisocial_behaviour

Dr_Anthony T. Barker Wins First International #Brain Stimulation Award

#Dr_Barker was born in Morley, Leeds, UK in 1950 and he received his Bachelors in #Engineering in 1971 from the University of Sheffield, and obtained a PhD in there in 1976. From 1976 to 1990 he worked as a #physicist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, and had noscript of Lecturer at the University of Sheffield (1977-1999). Since 1999 he has been a Professor Associate at the University of Sheffield and is a Consultant #Clinical_Scientist in the Department of Medical #Physics and Clinical #Engineering at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, UK.

Dr. Barker first started his research on using time-varying magnetic fields to induce current flow in tissue in order to depolarize #neurons. Prior to this effort, direct electrical stimulation, with electrodes placed on the #scalp (or other body part), was the principle method used to induce #neuronal depolarization. However, this method had several flaws, and the high intensity of electrical stimulation is often painful. Magnetic fields, in contract, pass through the scalp and #skull unimpeded, and give much more precise results. In 1985, Drs. Barker, Jalinous, and Freeston reported the first demonstration of #TMS. Dr. Barker and colleagues produced twitching in a specific area of the hand in human volunteers by applying #TMS to the motor cortex in the opposite hemisphere that controls movement of that muscle. This demonstrated that #TMS was capable of stimulating precise area of #brain and without the pain of electrical stimulation. Moreover, they did this in awake alert human volunteers.

Today, #TMS has become a vital tool in neuroscience, since depending on stimulation parameters, specific #brain areas can either be excited or inhibited. Thus, Dr. Barker’s original demonstration of a noninvasive and pain-free method of stimulating specific #brain areas has evolved into a critical tool in basic #neuroscience investigation, in the study of #brain abnormalities in disease states, and in the treatment of a host of #neurological and #psychiatric conditions. Since 1985, there have been several thousand publications involving #TMS.
