Microsoft's Project Silica envisages the use of laser optics to encode data in extremely durable quartz glass.
This is a glass square that contains measures 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm x 2 mm and holds 75.6 GB of data. The "magic" is in the recording technology.
The hard silica glass can withstand being boiled in hot water, baked in an oven, microwaved, flooded, scoured, demagnetized and other environmental threats.
