A tent camp in Johannesburg around 1901 during the second Boer War. When the Boers refused to surrender, the British rounded up thousands of Afrikaners (boers) and put them in concentration camps. Between June 1901 and May 1902, 115,000 people were brought into the concentration camps. There were a total of 45 tented camps built for Boer internees and 64 camps for black Africans. The camps were poorly administered from the outset and 48,000 Afrikaners lost their lives in the disease-ridden tents (about 10% of the Boer population at the time). Most of the victims were women and children.
