This decoration is about 2,500 years old. The innoscription on the gem reads "Dexamenos epoie Chios," that is, "The work of Dexamen from Chios." Dexamenos is known as one of the most skilled carvers of ancient Greece. He worked in Athens in the second half of the fifth century B.C.
