$12M fake Apple devices fraud case in southern California 📰

A scam involving "returning" some 16,000 counterfeit iPhones and iPads to Apple stores has resulted in five arrests.

📱 A criminal ring operating throughout southern California has been charged with stealing some $12.3 million worth of Apple products by "returning" real-looking counterfeits that didn't work to Apple Stores. The stores would then replace the non-functional clones with genuine iPhones and iPads, which were then shipped overseas.

👮 Five Chinese nationals living in the Los Angeles area were apprehended on May 30.

A similar crime ring using the same technique in 2019 "returned" over 10,000 China-made fake iPhones, defrauding Apple of an estimated $6.1 million. The leaders were eventually sentenced to between and four and five years in prison.

It's curious, how good the counterfeit had to be that the staff didn't notice that the product was fake on reception?!

Apple has tweaked the specifications of the new iPad Air – installed M2 chip now has 9 graphics processing units, not 10 as previously stated.

The information in the press release for the new tablets, as well as the tech support document, has not yet been corrected.

According to analyst Mark Gurman, Apple software chief Craig Federighi has tasked engineers with developing as many new AI chips for iOS 18 as possible, which will include the ability to control apps via Siri.

The new feature will work system-wide, but initially only in Apple's own apps. The company will also provide APIs to developers to implement the feature in third-party apps.

The release of the innovation should be expected no earlier than 2025. Nevertheless, the feature will probably be announced as early as 10 June during WWDC 24.

🤝 Apple and OpenAI partnership worries Microsoft

The deal between OpenAI and Apple, which will be announced at WWDC, ‘scared’ Microsoft.

$3 trillion is the total value of all of the company's outstanding shares. Nevertheless, chipmaker Nvidia stole the moment. It only crossed the $3 trillion mark for the first time ever, but it overtook Apple to become the world's second most valuable company as of market close today, trailing only Microsoft.

Apple became the world's first $3 trillion company in January 2022, and it has recrossed that mark several times since then. However, this is the first time that Apple has dropped to be the world's third most valuable company since 2019.

'Passwords' will move 🔐

Apple plans to introduce a new Passwords app in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15.

The Passwords app, which will serve as an alternative to third-party apps, will provide a simpler way for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users to access their stored login information.

There's already a Passwords feature built into Apple's operating systems, but it is hidden in the Settings app and it can be a little difficult to find for those who are not familiar with it.

Apple's aim with the Passwords app is to encourage customers to use stronger passwords and avoid repeating passwords for multiple websites and services.
