📞 Features Apple didn't mention at the presentation

1. Flashlight got a global upgrade. You can adjust not only the brightness but also the width of the light.

2. In the Control Center there is a shutdown button in the corner of the screen. Very useful for those who constantly forget the combination of buttons to turn off.

3. New animation when changing the volume as a preparation for the touch button in iPhone 16.

4. In the Control Center you can add Vehicle movement tags – very useful from motion sickness in transport

5. Now it will be possible to save the constantly dying battery. iPhone will analyze how you charge and use it, and will offer you the optimal charging limit.

6. 'Camera' has learned to record video when music from any app is playing on the iPhone – it used to pause.

🧠 What can new Siri be useful for?

🗺 Siri has finally become useful! It's powered by ChatGPT-4o and remembers the context of the conversation. In addition, she recognizes what is happening on the screen, so it will be able to perform almost any action you request. Additionally, users can type to Siri, and switch between text and voice to communicate as they wish. Siri also has a brand-new design with an elegant glowing light.

The virtual assistant is powered by Apple Intelligence. As for Apple Intelligence, it can everything that neural networks have learned now:
・Generating images
・Suggesting files
・Generating text
・Remove unnecessary objects from a photo
・Recording a conversation with trannoscript, but the other user will be notified about it
・Creating smart replies in Mail based on clarifying questions
・Searching photos with clarifying details
・Create Genmoji – custom emoji

That's not all that the AI in iPhone can do. However, some functions were seen before, for example, sorting photos and creating Memories.

🪙 Apple isn’t paying OpenAI to use the chatbot

🤖 The pact with OpenAI is part of a broader push by Apple into AI. The iPhone maker laid out the plans during the Keynote, showing off AI features for the iPhone, iPad and Mac. However, the non-ChatGPT capabilities — branded as Apple Intelligence — were designed by the company in-house.

📰 As sources told Bloomberg, Apple has not started paying OpenAI anything for integration into its own systems, and believes that promoting the ChatGPT product to hundreds of millions of its devices in this way has even much more value. OpenAI has agreed to this option, even providing fresh ChatGPT-4o mechanics for use inside Apple's systems.

But the agreement means that users can sign up for a paid, extended subnoscription to ChatGPT Plus to increase the speed and capabilities of the chatbot, which will be sold through an in-app purchase system. And from there, Apple itself will get its share in the form of a 30% commission. This way, both companies can make a little bit of money, and the user can continue to use the free version of ChatGPT.

👨‍💻 Here comes the end of  WWDC24

📸 Sharing highlights and photos from the last conference. In the photos you can see the legend Steve Wozniak, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Greg Joswiak – Apple's Vice President of Global Marketing and cool merch along with WWDC installation from Apple Park.

Tim Cook in 𝕏 summarised the results:
Thank you to all the developers from around the world who joined us in person and virtually for an incredible #WWDC24! I can't wait to see what great apps you create.

👍 Indeed, it was one of the most interesting Apple presentations and conferences in recent times. The results and news of the conference can be discussed until the autumn, just when the new iOS (along with iPhone 16) will be available for common users.

📱 18 feature that needs to be copied by video apps

This fall, the 🎞 app introduces InSight, a feature that displays timely information about actors, characters, and music from Apple TV+ movies and shows onscreen in real time or on the iPhone when using it as an Apple TV remote. Conveniences of this type have been seen in various video apps before.

However, Apple also demoed a new tvOS 18 feature that automatically puts subnoscripts on screen when you skip back in a video. It’s similar to what happens when you ask, “What did she say?”

Instead of making that request, the system now just assumes that if you’re skipping back, it’s because you missed something, so it puts subnoscripts on screen for 10 seconds automatically.

What Apple didn’t say during its presentation is that the same feature extends to its other platforms too. Auto-subnoscripts on rewind is baked into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia; it’s available in the betas today. That's fanstastic!

This feature could inspire YouTube, Netflix, and other popular video apps to copy 📱. Maybe there are cases where auto-subnoscripts will annoy some users, but still in most cases, it's convenient.

All the new features that won’t arrive until iOS 18.1 or later

As you asked, iOS 📱 release date – September 9,16 or 23 (expected).
The updating is promised to be one of the most awaited and full of new features.

However, Apple showcased at the presentation features that are not coming this fall. But it wasn’t always clear what will arrive in 18.0, and what’s being saved for later this year or even some time in 2025.

Here’s the full list of features we know won’t arrive until iOS 18.1 or later:

🧠 Shared access to Apple Intelligence and not beta - the feature will roll out on a first-come, first-served basis, and likely won't work outside of the US; removal of the beta status could happen as early as 2025.
📧 New Mail app features.
🗺 New Siri mode inside third-party apps and task management.
🔗 Virtual Display for Mac on Vision Pro and Multiview support for 🎞.
🏡 Editing spatial video in Final Cut Pro.
📖 iPhone Mirroring on Mac (someone asked in the comments why this function isn't working after updating for macOS Sequoia, so that's why).
🦠 New emoji from Unicode 16.
💼 New Home app with support for robot vacuum cleaners.

⌨️ Updated system keyboard in iOS 18

💼Now the keyboard has a kind of predictive calculator – with it you can perform some calculations, currency or measures conversions and other things right in the message input field. The function does not work in all apps yet, probably developers will need to activate support for this functionality, but for now you can try it out in Messages.

🌐 In additon, the keyboard can work in bilingual mode – this is when one keyboard layout has 2 languages for typing at once. The keyboard in this mode displays a special designation on the space bar. Finally, Spanish and French words that we type in the English layout will not be underlined in red.

🏠No story for smart home Apple Intelligence just yet

🤖 Unfortunately, all the new Apple Intelligence and Siri features will not be available on the Apple TV or HomePod, arguably Apple’s most voice-orientated device. It’s unclear if Apple Intelligence support for those platforms will be available later, or if new generations of hardware will be required to run the various on-device models.

👥 Nevertheless, among upgrades to HomeKit and the Home app there is the addition of guest user access, allowing you to let visitors control your smart accessories temporarily, without adding them as a full permanent member of your Home. You can choose how and when guests are allowed to access your home. They can only control these accessories while they are physically located at your address, so there’s no risk of tampering from afar.

🤪 Vacuum cleaner integration will be available in the Home app, starting later this year.
It will support features like turning your vacuum on and off, changing the cleaning mode, and reading current charge status. Users will be able to ask Siri to control your vacuum to start a cleaning session.

🔌 Finally, the Home app will allow users who live in homes supplied by participating Pacific Gas and Electric Company customers to see a tally of their electricity usage right inside the Home app. It will be possible to view usage in peak and off-peak times, and compare changes in your usage over time. By the way, if you are an eligible customer, you will be able to connect your account to the Home app in an update to iOS 18 available later this year.
