Dr. Babak Momeni

Title: Synthetic ecology: using microbes as model systems for studies in community ecology
Research:
Complexity of natural microbial communities (involving many species, multitude of interactions, and non-steady environment) has impeded attempts to discover the link between community interactions and functions. To study microbial communities, our lab instead examines communities at different levels of complexity to search for general governing principles. These include simulated in silico communities, synthetic communities of microbes engineered to engage in defined interactions, and simple microbial communities isolated from nature. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, we combine quantitative experimentation with mathematical modeling to discover interactions and to explain functions that arise from those interactions. Our long-term goal is to devise strategies to control microbial communities. This will have broad impact in biomedical applications (e.g. managing microbial infections), environmental applications (e.g. degrading waste), as well as industrial applications (e.g. producing biofuels).

Title: Swimming in shear flow: Rheo-/chemotactic behavior of active particles in confinement
Biography:
Ali Naji is an associate professor of physics at the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) in Tehran, Iran. He received his PhD in Physics from the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, Germany, in 2005 on the theory and simulation of charged polymers. He carried out his postdoctoral work at the University of California, Santa Barbara (2006-2009) and, as a Royal Society Newton Fellow (2009-2011), at the University of Sheffield and at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics of the University of Cambridge, UK. His research interests include physics of Coulomb fluids and strongly charged macromolecules (such as colloids, polymers and membranes), nano-particle/DNA complexes, electrostatic stability of virus-like nano-capsids, Casimir effect, electrostatics of soft disordered media and, more recently, fluctuating hydrodynamics of strongly confined fluids, and active self-propulsion in fluid media.

پژوهشگاه دانشهای بنیادی از بدو تأسیس محلی برای پیشبرد پژوهشهای میانرشتهای بودهاست. نخستین همایش مرزهای علوم زیستی در راستای چنین هدفی برگزار خواهد شد تا پژوهشگران و دانشجویان در حوزههای مختلفی چون بیوانفورماتیک، بیوفیزیک، بیوشیمی، زیستشناسی مولکولی، زیستشناسی سیستمها، ژنتیک و تکامل را گردهم آورد و زمینه را برای بحث و تبادل نظر در خصوص پرسشهای درهمتنیده زیستشناسی امروز فراهم نماید.

Dr. Sanati-Nezhad' primary research interest involves BioMEMS, Microfluidics, Tissue Engineering, Micro and Nano Technology, and Lab-on-Chip. His research group has focus on development of integrated bioinspired microdevices using microfluidics and tissue engineering approaches for disease modeling, biological systems modeling, and drug discovery. Another research interest of his group is to develop point-of-care devices for testing infectious diseases, and portable tools for detection of plant and food pathogens.
