Dr. Sanati-Nezhad' primary research interest involves BioMEMS, Microfluidics, Tissue Engineering, Micro and Nano Technology, and Lab-on-Chip. His research group has focus on development of integrated bioinspired microdevices using microfluidics and tissue engineering approaches for disease modeling, biological systems modeling, and drug discovery. Another research interest of his group is to develop point-of-care devices for testing infectious diseases, and portable tools for detection of plant and food pathogens.
Dr. Shafiee’s lab aims to integrate biology/medicine with micro- and nanotechnology to develop innovative tools and solve unmet clinical problems, including applications in infectious disease diagnostics and treatment monitoring for global health, vaccine delivery, and fertility. His lab is particularly interested in developing point-of-care diagnostics through utilizing advances in consumer electronics, nanotechnology, and optical/electrical/magnetic sensing modalities.

🔹Abstract :
Unfortunately, highly selective chemical probes (agonists, antagonists, traceable substrates, etc.) of protein kinases are difficult to develop because the 500 protein kinases share highly homologous ATP binding pockets. Dr. Shokat’s laboratory has solved this fundamental problem for the largest family of enzymes in the human genome, protein kinases, by development of a strategy based on a combination of protein engineering and organic synthesis. They have termed this approach chemical genetics.

His current research :
– Computational Cancer Genomics: Using high-throughput sequencing data, we are trying to understand different aspects of Cancer in Human.
– The application of deep-learning techniques in Life-Science: Using state-of-the-art techniques in Big-Data analysis, we are trying to understand and model the behavior of living organisms.
– Metabolic networks constraint-based modeling: As the best-studied biological network, metabolic networks have a wide range of application from biotechnology to medicine. we try to improve in-silico models of metabolism by adding more realistic physical constraints. The ultimate goal could be having an in-silico whole-cell model that can respond to environmental fluctuations.
