Explore St. Petersburg with the ITMO.NEWS editorial team! 🕶
Congratulations, you’ve got to the boss! In this installment of the series, we’ll take a walk around the favourite locations of our editor Anna Huddleston:
🏛 Petrogradskaya Side
From the Petrogradskaya metro station, I take a few steps south down Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt to see arguably my favorite building in the city – The House with Two Towers – have a cup of coffee at one the cafes around it and keep walking down towards Gorkovskaya and ITMO’s Kron campus. If I need an extra dose of the city, then I’ll cross the Trinity Bridge and find myself in the very heart of St. Pete.
🍰 Sever-Metropol bakery
I’m not a huge sugar fan but I always stop by a Sever-Metropol bakery (there’re several on Nevsky Prospekt alone) and have a latte and a korzinka Ladoga, a scrumptious pastry filled with caramelized sweetened condensed milk. One of the oldest bakeries in the city, it has a true St. Petersburg vibe and the treats here are as beautiful as they are delicious.
📕 Podpisnie Izdaniya
If you’ve never been to the Podpisnie Izdaniya bookstore, you must go. Newly restored, it magically blends history, a modern atmosphere, and a passion for the city. I love it for its uncompromised commitment to literature and art in all its forms, and have bought several posters here that now live at my house.
🍲 Vasileostrovsky Market
From beetroot waffles to hand-tossed ramen, my favorite place for what’s hot – and cold – in food is Vasileostrovsky Market. You can’t get past the basil and lime scents of the Vietnamese pho boiling right here in giant vats. The communal tables are filled with people sampling California-style burritos and vegan burgers. Craving fresh fruit and veggies? There’s a regular farmers’ market too.
⛱ Zelenogorsk
It's an easy train ride away, especially on Lastochka, and you're walking through a beautiful park toward an expansive sandy beach. A trip on an observation wheel, some ice cream, and the promise of sun tan complete this perfect summer day.

What's it like for international students to make friends at ITMO? We asked a few of them to recount their experiences of making Russian friends.
👩 Daxta – “For me, making Russian friends was not a difficult task. Luckily, I was assigned a Buddy who has been there for me ever since I first arrived in Russia. Later, she introduced me to some of her close friends and I have been in contact with most of them.”
👩 Melany – “Russians like to meet people from other countries; for example, one of my friends likes Spanish and the culture of my country, Panama. This became a common ground to connect.”
👨 Subhrajit – “I actively sought opportunities to engage with local students. Being open-minded helped me connect with people who were eager to share their culture. Invitations to celebrate festivals such as New Year, Maslenitsa, and Easter allowed me to witness firsthand the vibrant customs and traditions of Russia.”
