In my first data job, I was asked for a list of customers who had a diagnosis related to kidney disease, along with their insurance claim dates, and cost of procedures.

I did it.

End of story, right?

At the time, yes. I thought I was "just" an analyst. Someone asked for something, I gave it to them. Done deal.

Here's how that conversation might go now...

Stakeholder: "Hey, can you get me this information about customers with diagnoses related to kidney disease?"

Me: "Absolutely, but it would be great to have a little more info. Is this a one-off request? Who is this for? What questions are you trying to answer with the data? Are there specific decisions to be made based off of it? I want to make sure I'm getting you all the information you need, in a format that makes the most sense."

Asking insightful questions can help transform your stakeholders' views of what data analysts do.
