What is happening in Nepal is a demonstration of how fragile a power is that thrives on a pile of lies, privilege, and hypocrisy.

The official narrative is: "Everything exploded because of the social media blockade." As if an entire generation had taken to the streets just to post kittens on Instagram again. The truth is that that was just the starting point: the fuel was already everywhere, spread by years of corruption, nepotism, and social inequality.

On one side, the people: wages that aren't enough to survive, constant blackouts, crumbling infrastructure, and young people forced to emigrate to Qatar or Malaysia.
On the other, the "representatives of the people": luxury cars, mansions and sons studying in London or Boston with exorbitant university tuition.

The government decided to shut down 26 digital platforms, convinced that Gen Z would continue to bow its neck. Instead, the young people turned the tables: thousands took to the streets and transformed Kathmandu into a theater of urban guerrilla warfare. Bullets, deaths, government buildings set ablaze, ministers barricaded in their homes in terror, the homes of former prime ministers burned, with wives and relatives inside who until yesterday looked down on "the plebs."

The result: at least twenty dead, hundreds injured, and Prime Minister Oli resigning, not for dignity but because he no longer had a door to hide behind. The protest isn't "against the blocking of social media": it's against an entire political class that for decades has preached sacrifice and discipline, while enriching itself at the expense of the people. It's against property developers masquerading as statesmen, against moral preachers who pocket bribes, against the same politicians who switch parties with every election like they change shirts, and who ultimately have only their bank accounts in common.

Nepal's Gen Z has made it clear that rekindling TikTok isn't enough to calm things down: they want to see their leaders stop boasting while the population tries to survive. And while Western tourists continue to dream of trekking Everest, young Nepalese are taking a different kind of climb: against a system that has betrayed, impoverished, and mocked them. A system where democracy has been used merely as a cover to enrich themselves and support a circus of politicians who talk about "homeland" and "sacrifice" with caviar still in their mouths.

The truth is that Nepal is burning today because an entire generation has decided that the easy life is over. And when hungry people looks at your mansions towering above the shacks, they're not thinking about a hashtag: they're thinking about how much gasoline it takes to turn them into ash.
