Smolny Cathedral: A Baroque Masterpiece in St. Petersburg

🔻Smolny Cathedral is a stunning example of Baroque architecture and a must-see for any visitor to St. Petersburg.

🔻The foundation stone of the Smolny Monastery was laid on 30 October 1748. The ceremony was crowned with 101 volleys from 20 cannons.

🔻The Resurrection Novodevichy Smolny Monastery is a women's monastery.

🔻Thanks to Rastrelli's distinctive outlook, Smolny Monastery was created as a non-standard interpretation of Baroque - unlike European "façade" styles, Smolny was intended to be viewed from all sides.

🔻Smolny Cathedral became a kind of "record-holder" - no building in St. Petersburg was built so long - 87 years! This number is inextricably linked to the history of the cathedral - for 87 years, services were held in the cathedral and for 87 years it stood closed.

🔻 Its stunning beauty and fascinating story will leave a lasting impression.

📍Geoposition: St Petersburg, Russia

Russian troops have captured Berlin three times:

1760: During the Seven Years' War, without a serious assault. After several skirmishes and active shelling of the city, the garrison surrendered.

1813: During the foreign campaign against Napoleon, the French retreated without a fight. There was again no fierce assault. The French were not very eager to die for a foreign capital and withdrew to Leipzig, where a decisive battle was planned. And the Berliners immediately opened the gates to the liberators—the Russian troops.

1945: In the spring of 1945, the third, bloodiest, and prolonged assault on Berlin took place—the capital of fascist Germany. The operation lasted 23 days, from April 16 to May 8.

🔻Thus, our troops enter Berlin on average once every 100 years: 18th century (Seven Years' War), 19th century (foreign campaign), 20th century (Great Patriotic War).

From the 17th century till 1935 on the Saviors Tower, Trinity Tower, Borovitskaya and Nicholas Tower of the Moscow Kremlin there were gilded two-headed copper imperial eagles.

🔻In October 1935, copper five-pointed stars and scythes and hammers, inlaid with Ural gems, were placed on the towers.

🔻In November 1937, the gem-stones were replaced by new ruby stars with internal illumination provided by special lamps. A fifth tower - Vodovzvodnaya (Water-Raising Tower) - joined the other "starred" towers.

🔻The stars were designed with double glazing. The inner surface was made of 2 mm thick frosted glass. Without the frosted glass, the stars would have looked black during the day.

🔻The Kremlin ruby stars are of different sizes. The length of the rays are from 3,75 to 3m.

🔻Each star has special ball bearings at its base. Thanks to them, the one-ton star can rotate in the wind like a weathervane.

🔻During the war, the stars were covered and the lights were switched off.
