The Only City in the World Situated Directly on the Arctic Circle

🔻Salekhard is located on the bank of the Ob River, not far from where it flows into the Kara Sea. It is about 2,000 km from Moscow and 2,600 km from the North Pole.

🔻The first mention of the area dates back to 1595. The settlement was a fortress and was called Obdorsk. In 1933, it was renamed Salekhard.

🔻Places to Visit:

☆ "66th Parallel" Stele
☆ "Obdorsk Ostrog" Historical and Architectural Complex
☆ "Fakel" Cable-Stayed Bridge
☆ I.S. Shemanovsky Yamalo-Nenets Regional Museum and Exhibition Complex
☆ Museum of Polar Aviation
☆ "Mammoth" Monument

🔻In winter, temperatures in Salekhard sometimes drop to -50°C, while in summer they rarely rise above +20°C.

🔻From June 7 to July 7, the polar day continues here, and for 5 months there are "twilight nights" when the sun only sinks slightly below the horizon.

📍Geoposition: Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Russia

The Birth of an Iconic Chocolate Wrapper: The Story Behind Krasny Oktyabr's "Alyonka"

🔻The iconic image of "Alyonka," the rosy-cheeked girl featured on the wrapper of Krasny Oktyabr's beloved chocolate bar, has become synonymous with Russian confectionery.

🔻In 1964, the Krasny Oktyabr factory in Moscow held a competition to find the perfect face for their new chocolate bar. They received over 300 submissions, but none seemed quite right.

🔻Then, a photographer named Alexander Gerinas submitted a photo of his daughter, Yelena Gerina. With her big, expressive eyes, rosy cheeks, and mischievous smile, Yelena perfectly captured the essence of childhood innocence and joy.

🔻The factory was so impressed with the photo that they chose it as the face of their new chocolate bar, which they named "Alyonka" after Yelena. And so, the iconic image was born.

🔻Over the years, Alyonka has become one of the most recognizable brands in Russia.

For sure.

[blis-ta-yu-shchiy]
Glowing, glimmering

🔻This is a participle (present active imperfective) which comes from the verb блистать, not блестеть. The difference between these verbs is in my early post▶️here.

🔻Блистающий consists of the root 'блист-', suffixes '-a-' and '-ющ-' and ending '-ий'.

🔻Vowel И is written in the root because the root is followed by suffix '-a-'. If it didn’t, vowel Е would be written:
Let’s compare: блИстать but блЕстеть.

🔻There is a similar adjective:

Блистательный
[blis-ta-til'-nyj]
Brilliant, resplendent, splendid

Сначала салаты свои едите, а потом углеродные выбросы в атмосферу выбрасываете.
First you eat your salads, and then you make carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

🔻According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the most prolific mother in history was the wife of a Russian peasant, Feodor Vassilyev of Shuya, Ivanovo Region, who gave birth to 69 children in the 18th century.

🔻According to a report submitted to the Moscow government on 27 February 1782 by the Nikolsky Monastery, Mrs Vassilyeva gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets during 27 confinements between 1725 and 1765.

🔻Of her 69 children, 67 are said to have survived infancy.
