Most likely explanation is Iran behind most of this. This might also explain the modern russian weaponry as they have to get *something* for their drones, nuclear knowhow would be paid too dearly for this imho. But for months (years really), Saudi Arabia and Israel have been getting closer to a permanent peace deal. Both would gain, Saudis with access to a high tech market, Israel with massively increased business and geopolitical reach. Iran more or less controls Hamas and to a lesser extent the Hisbollah. If Hamas can drag this out long enough for the terrible pictures of "collateral damage" to appear, they might just have a chance of dragging other countries there into the fight. Also mid eastern countries and donors tend to give to winners, be it IS or Hamas. So, the longer Hamas can drag this out, the more they "win". They might actually impose quite some casualties if Israel tries to fight a ground war in Gaza. Israel has been fucked up there before and dont really want to get dragged into a long fight with infantry there. Unless they literally ethnically cleanse the whole 2 million Palestineans from Gaza, i am a bit at a loss where Israel can even declare victory. Destroy Hamas? Illusory. Cripple it? That would still be a win for Hamas. Also the sheer amount of hostages will ensure that for years now they will be used to exchange them for fighters. The next couple of weeks will be strategically interesting. My best bet is that Israel will have to find some form of cease fire eventually, with Hamas intact, while maintaining face, and some long term agreements coming up.
