Rafflesia: the giant parasite flower

The world’s largest single flower spends most of its life hidden inside jungle vines as tiny filaments, with no leaves, stems, or roots of its own.

After nearly two years, it bursts open as a five-lobed “corpse flower” that reeks of rotting meat to lure carrion flies.

Recent Oxford-led research warns that most of the 42 known Rafflesia species are now in serious danger of extinction due to habitat loss.

Did you know?
Stingless bees like the Melipona species in Mexico (e.g., Melipona beecheii, sacred to the Maya) and Brazil don't build those perfect hexagonal honeycombs we know from honeybees.

Instead, they construct horizontal brood combs for larvae and store their precious, medicinal honey in separate wax-resin pots—a unique tropical adaptation! 🐝🍯

In 1988, during Christmas time, young Icelandic musician Björk appeared on the children’s TV programme Fóstbræður. She sat by a television set, explained how it worked, and dismantled it while describing the internal components.

The segment resurfaced on YouTube in the mid-2010s and became a popular video, loved for its calm, curious tone and wholesome 1980s style.
