Jacob's Message to Dogen
I just finished my yearly rewatch of Lost last week (2nd favorite show ever l, God it's so good) so I'm at the point where I just rewatch certain things. I'm at the part where they bring Sayid to the temple to heal him and Hurley gives Dogen the briefcase that Jacob gave him.
So the Annkh in the briefcase contained a message for Dogen from Jacob. Dogen asks them for their names and they tell them to him. The last name they mentioned Sayid, I can only assume that the message contained all of their names because they were the last surviving candidates. When Hurley asked what the message said, Dogen's interpreter Lennon says that it says if your friend (Sayid) dies, then they're all in trouble.
It never crossed my mind, but could it be that Jacob picked Sayid to be his successor and defeat the Man in Black? He knew his skills and what he could do. Dogen gave him the dagger to kill the Man in Black. Could that have been Jacob's plan? That when he was brought back to life corrupted, he was no longer an option to lead. Which is why later in the season when Jacob talks to Jack, James, Kate, and Hurley , that at that point he would take any one of them to volunteer to protect the island.
What are your thoughts on this?

Hear Me Out: Jacob Was the Real Villain of Lost
I just finished Lost and honestly, I can’t see how Jacob is viewed as a good guy or even morally grey. When you really break down his actions, he’s not a benevolent protector, he’s a manipulative warden trapped in the same lie his “mother” created.
Think about it:
• His so-called “mother” murdered an innocent woman, stole her babies, and raised them in captivity. She destroyed the Man in Black’s settlement just to stop him from leaving. She didn’t protect the Island, she controlled it
• Jacob inherits that same mindset. His first major act? Brutally beating/killing his own brother and throwing him into the Source, literally creating the Smoke Monster. The evil he spends eternity fighting only exists because of him
• The Man in Black just wanted to leave. There’s never any real evidence that his escape (initially) would end the world. Jacob/his Mother simply says it would, and everyone just believes him.
• Jacob’s “followers” act like zealots: kidnapping, torturing, and killing people in his name and he lets it happen. That’s not moral restraint; that’s moral cowardice.
• Even the “candidates” are victims. They’re pulled into Jacob’s endless game and either die or become the next prisoner guarding his Island. His version of salvation is just passing on his own chains.
The tragedy of Lost is that everyone who comes to the Island keeps repeating Jacob’s lie: protecting something they don’t understand, suffering for someone else’s faith.
⸻
TL;DR:
Jacob isn’t a “good guy” or morally grey, he’s a self-righteous manipulator who causes most of the Island’s suffering. The Man in Black might be vengeful, but he’s the only one who ever wanted freedom.

Lost has the one of the best uses of time travel in any medium
Hi everyone,
Maybe there are some spoilers in this so if you’re early in the series go finish it!
I’m sure this has already been discussed to death but it’s such an interesting topic I thought I would bring it up again.
The idea of man of science and man of faith and destiny are big themes in the show and time travel is a really interesting way to bring them together.
Effectively, both John and Jack are correct.
John thinks they are destined (in a mystical, almost religious way) to do something important on the island.
This is of course the case, but it’s for a scientific reason, namely that everything had to happen a certain way due to the time loop.
Lost managed to intertwine its main themes really well and I haven’t seen this in any other media (maybe someone can recommend something that does it better?)
What do you think?

The older I get the more I appreciate Jack and see the flaws in Locke
The first time I watched this amazing series about seven years ago, I was obsessed with lockes character. He was bad ass, mystical, and wanted to find answers for the same questions that the audience wanted. The more that I’ve matured I think I’ve started to realize that while those things are all still true, he can be deceptively selfish. He gets so caught up in wanting to find out the mysteries of the island that he puts people around him in jeopardy. Not to mention that a lot of what was him being “connected” did the island was actually manipulation from Smoky. He wanted so bad to be special that he was taken advantage of. He was right about a lot of different things having to do with the island but still. Jack on the other hand, has always been a practical realist from the start and has always put the needs of others above himself. While John was off, searching the jungle for answers, Jack was making sure that their community was surviving. This might not make him flashy, but it does make him a solid leader.

Across The Sea
Can we talk a little bit about Across The Sea? I'm not talking about the actual content that was d divisive among fans, but more the performances of Mark Pellegrino and Titus Welliver as Jacob and the Man in Black. Two phenomenal character actors playing so well off each other. You can believe they're brothers by their scenes together, even if it was only scenes in 3 episodes. I really like both in whatever tv shows they show up in, and think they were a great part of this episode
Edit: also fuck mother for ruining MiB's life. He really was special, and all he wanted to do was leave the island because he felt like he didn't belong. She destroyed a village, killed his people, filled the hole, and then made mamas boy Jacob take over for her. She deserved what she got

Klugh Kuestion
On my 108th rewatch, just finished Enter 77. I am realizing that I don't fully understand why Ms. Klugh would be willing to die in this circumstance. Is it simply that she didn't want to be used/tortured/interrogated to give away the location of the barracks? Is that worth dying for? Was Klugh just that much of a zealot?
In order for her to have this level of commitment, she must have been in the inner circle, and have more access to information about Jacob and the importance of the 'work they're doing' because, upon rewatch, it feels to me like Klugh gave her life for little to nothing.
What did I miss?

Charlie
I’m a first time watcher and I’m on season 3. Charlie annoys the crap out of me. Like he’s so overprotective of Claire and she doesn’t even want it. He didn’t like that Locke was getting close to Claire and did that stunt to make him look bad. Now I’m on the episode that he doesn’t like Desmond for saving Claire from drowning.
