You can make hammer and some other tools out of rock salt. Rock salt hammer has more durability than its iron counterpart, and since hammers work like early game forge hammer, you can use it to double rock salt when mining and get lots of early game hammer material.

oh, yeah, ofc once you get your hammer you should use it to mine a lapis vein (once again, to get forge hammer effect) and get luck on your Tinkers pickaxe - raw ore drops are affected by luck modifier. Place crafting station next to a tool station to apply 8 items at once, this will save you some headache adding that 450 lapis.
