I don't know about Baldur's Gate, but in a tabletop RPG soap can be very useful:
- You can clean yourself to look presentable at a meeting
- You can clean your wounds to avoid infection
- You can clean food to avoid food poisoning
- You can use it to make slippery traps for your enemies
- You can use it on objects to make them easier to slide or remove
