In Italy we have two different words for "Authoritative", "autorevole" and "autoritario" (for the non-pasta souls among us)

I don't know if this also happens in English

A person who is "autorevole" has authority and respect that has been gained by being a good person who is great at communication and social skills, but is also able to stand up for themselves when required.

An "autoritaria" person is one who gains their authority and fear through terror. They don't enjoy "respect", it's more that people are afraid of the consequences and prefer to avoid them when possible, and people-please them when not.
100% likely that person gets shit talked behind their back though.
Sadly, a lot of parents are like this. They do not have the skills to communicate effectively (which also strains their relationships, which is another thing that puts their kids in an emotionally bad place), they do not know how to persuade their child to nor do something stupid without resorting to blackmail and punishment, and they cannot stand children "talking back" because they are in the wrong, they *know* they are in the wrong, they don't want to be perceived as "weak" by admitting that so they just force their opinion and take.

Guess which parent successfully raises a mature, stable child that will grow up not having ruined their life with drugs and bad decisions, and which will cause their children to rebel, sneak away and look for alternative figures of authority, mostly in their inexpert peers?
Exactly

I am so mad that it's considered almost mandatory to have children and everybody should do it.

No. That's not true. Many people are not cut out to have children and they should hold off.

Sadly, if you are responsible enough to understand that you would not be up to the task of raising children, you are in a position where you would likely outperform the vast majority of parents who never had that level of self-awareness
