Epilogue - The End of Rimton
The caravan crossed the muddy lake that gave into the secluded valley were the town of Rimwon was located. It had been a year since they last came here, but travelers passing through the area mentioned the town had grown a lot since then.
Truth be told, the merchants and guards saw the high walls of granite blocks, which separated almost half of the valley. There was a large entrance near the middle, but they knew such area would be filled with traps and turrets.
Instead, they came through the southern road, pushing aside a large metal gate. They let the muffalos come in first, so they could stop and graze after the long journey. Their packs were heavy with items, which they hoped would pick the interest of the people of Rimton.
But when the merchants came in and closed the door behind them, what they saw as not the lively little town they remembered.
The air was heavy with the putrid stench of corpses, which were laying across the entirety of the town. Some were piled up in a small alcove near the mountain. Most were laying across the streets. Nearly all of them wore tattered clothes adorned with spikes -- clearly pirates.
The farm was rotting with the acres of crops, the autumn harvest seemingly never completed. A large animal corpse laid near the farm, with its body covered in flies and vermin. The long, blood-soaked horn was the only sign that this creature was once a majestic thrumbo.
The merchants, in chock, called out for any survivors. None of the corpses looked like civilized people, so they expected - or at least hoped - the colonist would be hiding somewhere in the colony.
When no answer came, the traders decided to look for survivors. Some of them stayed back to guard the caravan, while the others walked into the colony through the central gravel road.
To the east there was a fenced area, overgrown with grass and vines. Flies swarmed the barn on the other side, and only a few chicks seemed to graze on the abundant grass. They could see some chicken carcasses inside the barn.
The traders walked with their guns in hand, in case any pirates were still around, ready to ambush them. They passed through the solar panels and wind turbines, which seemed mostly fine and working properly - though some of them had holes and bent spots where bullets had hit.
The road into the eastern side of the town was covered by a roof ahead, and the sidewalk on both sides was covered in shelves, all stocked with tons of steel, wood, and other construction materials.
The leader of the caravan knocked on the door. There was no answer. He kocked again, and this time they heard shuffling from inside. Some of the traders held their guns tighter, ready for a fight.
But when the door opened, they only saw a little girl. Her brown hair looked unkempt and dirty, and she clearly had been crying. The smell of death also came from the inside.
The traders, surprised, started asking questions. Was the girl okay? What happened to the town? Where are the people? The girl's eyes went wide - she clearly didn't want to remember. She started sobbing, but pushed the door open to let them in.
The door gave into a dining room which doubled as a small infirmary. One of the beds had a body laid on it - a woman, for the looks of it. Her body was emaciated and gave off a bad smell, but it wasn't in an advanced state of decomposition as the other corpses who were left to rot under the weather.
The traders decided to bring the girl to the kitchen so they could talk without the smell in the dining room. It seemed like the colony infrastructure was intact - there was electricity and plenty of food in the fridge.
Once the girl calmed enough, though her eyes were still teraing, she started talking. She said her name was Ayesha, and she lived here with five other people. She said one night, she heard shouting outside and one of the adults came in and told her to stay in her room.
She obeyed, because she knew there were evil people with guns outside and the adults would go fight them. She said she waited patiently, but wh
