I built my first Mac app — a simple alternative to Flow without subnoscriptions 🚀 (free promo codes inside)

Hey everyone! 👋
I’d like to share my very first Mac app: **Cyclework**.
It’s a clean and minimal Pomodoro-style focus timer I built because I used to love **Flow**, but I got tired of paying yet another **subnoscription** just to stay productive.
Honestly, the subnoscription trend on the App Store has gotten a bit out of hand, so I wanted to make something that feels premium, looks native on macOS, but stays affordable (and in this case, free for a few of you).
Cyclework lets you:
* Run **multi-phase Pomodoro cycles** (focus / short break / long break)
* Track your progress with **smart stats**
* Adjust sessions and timers easily from the **menu bar**
* Enjoy a **macOS-native design** that feels like it was built by Apple
* Integration with Apple Calendar
* Focus session customization
* Multilanguage

StenoAI: A free AI Meeting Notes Taker that runs using AI models on your Mac. Self hosted alternative to Fireflies, Granola, Otter & Jamie. Optimised for M series Macs.
A few months ago, I was about to spend $1,920 per year on Otter AI subnoscriptions, a cloud based AI meeting notes service. Before clicking purchase, I paused and thought: Could I build something using small language models that runs locally on my device, learn more about SLMs and save money?
Six weeks & 18 versions later, I’m happy to introduce StenoAI - A personal stenographer for every meeting.
🚀 StenoAI is an open-source Mac application (optimised for Apple Silicon Macs) that transcribes and summarizes your meetings entirely on your device. No cloud processing, no subnoscriptions, no bots joining your calls.
🆓 Completely free & open source. You can customise the summarisation prompts to suit your own industry (legal, finance or medical). Feel free to contribute improvements to the codebase as well.
One-click Setup - Unlike other open source solutions, StenoAI is packaged as a simple MacOS app with no complex setup or engineering knowledge required. Download, install, and start recording.
It’s a privacy-first AI meeting notes app that runs locally using small language models specifically OpenAI Whisper for trannoscription and Llama 3.2 (3 billion parameters) for summarization.
Platform Independent - It works with all meeting platforms — Zoom, Google Meets & Teams.
👉 Key takeaway - There’s potential for small language models running locally, but we’re still in the early days. Imagine what we could achieve if we can run GPT-4 locally on a Macbook or Phone. Privacy, zero cost, no running out of tokens & no vendor lock-in

New macOS security app from the MacPaw team — Moonlock
Hey everyone,
Our team at MacPaw has just released a new macOS security app called Moonlock.
It’s focused on keeping Macs safe from modern threats — using native macOS technologies like Endpoint Security and Network Extensions. The goal was to make something lightweight, easy to understand, and helpful even for users who aren’t deep into cybersecurity.
If you’re already using CleanMyMac, Moonlock goes a bit deeper — it adds real-time threat blocking, quarantining, scheduled scans, and system visibility.
We’d love to hear what you think about this approach to Mac security and if there are any tools or features you’d expect from an app like this.
More details are on our site: https://moonlock.com

If you want to use different Dock presets and have the Alfred Powerpack, but don’t want to purchase another app, try this Alfred workflow.
I recently came across a couple of new Dock apps on this subreddit, and it suddenly reminded me of an Alfred workflow I had discovered a few weeks ago, “Dock Switcher.” https://alfred.app/workflows/chrisgrieser/dock-switcher/
This workflow allows you to save your current Dock settings and load your presets. The presets I currently use are “Normal Day,” “Study,” and “Family.”
You can even load your presets using hotkeys. Simply create a Hotkey trigger, set your hotkey, choose Argument as Text, and enter the name of your preset in the text field. Then link the Hotkey node to “load.” (You will know what it means when you open the workflow in Alfred Preferences.)
I hope this can be helpful to some of you.

Vallum is amazing !
I was torn between Little Snitch and Lulu. On one hand, a fully featured, complex and expensive software (Little Snitch) that ultimately pack way too many unnecessary features for my usage. On the other hand, Lulu, not really user friendly and quite tedious when you need a bit more than the basic functionality. But the absolute deal breaker is Netiquette, the network monitor of Lulu. You are basically blind compared to alternatives as it doesn't support and UI could be better but it's open source so I'm not gonna be too picky about it. But yeah, I was using Lulu out of desperation, and today I decided to look for an alternatives and discovered Few alternatives :
- TinyShield (Discounted from 40$ to 19.5$)
- Vallum (15$) unlimited free trial
- Scudo (10$)
- Radio Silence (7$)
- Trip Mode 3 (?)
and a few others but a bit out of scope. I'm not gonna make a full review of every software but decided to go for Vallum and this is EXACTLY what I needed. TinyShield is interesting but very new, less featured than Vallum and basically more expensive so it's a no brainer for me.
I make this posts because I don't feel like Vallum get the recognition it deserves and it's a shame because it's got to be the perfect replacement for Little Snitch !

Capture System audio only played by all apps on mac
Does anybody know a code example of how to capture system audio on mac? I struggled to make a working code. Using chatgpt or claude does not help.
Bonus if you can do it in Rust. Otherwise, swift code is fine.

Get Later App
This is a cool program. Although it hasn't been updated in a few years. Is there something that does this that's still under developerment?

Looking for alternatives to CleanMyMac (budget not issue)
Alrighty, I'm in the process of removing Moonlock and CleanMyMac from my Mac and working on getting my refunds back (even with a visa dispute if that's what it'll take).
I'm looking most importantly for apps with as clean UI as CMM that can manage the following:
\- Uninstall and Update Apps
\- and Checking and managing Disk Space
For the App management side of things, both Appcleaner and Pearcleaner which I admit Pearcleaner is my favourite so I guess I answered my own question there (combined with FindAllFiles if there's any remnants of files left after uninstalling).
For updating apps, I used to rely on MacUpdater but support for that is ending early next year, so I tried Latest however it's very hit n miss when it came to support for which app sources (CMM tended to update any app even from AppStore which was a bonus).
As for Disk Space management, I did try Daisy Disk but the image generated was super confusing sadly, and OmniDisk was quite well, it worked..
Either way I'm keen for suggestions for apps you use.
Thank you! :)

Need an indexer/search app which can also index NAS and Cloud Services like OneDrive
So, the finder is nice and all but my problem is that I need an app which can also search (or index) files on a NAS (Synology and TrueNAS) and also OneDrive. Heck finder won't even find some .afpub files I stored in iCloud. Which is really strange
I added the NAS via Samba into finder (also Forklift) but it won't find every time a file. Same with OneDrive although if I recall I would need for this to have the files locally (which I want to avoid as those are alone 92GB).
Now I read about FAF, NeoFinder, etc. But anyone have a recommendation? Even if is is simply an indexer so that I can search atleast for the name of the file. Oh and it doesn't need to be free if it could help me in this situation.
