Need an app with nagging reminders and NO SUBSCRIPTION.
I need an app that can RELIABLY do nagging reminders. Years ago, I bought the app Due, because it had the ability to auto-snooze reminders. If would pop up a message to tell me to do something, and if I didn't clear it, it would auto-snooze and remind me again in whatever time I set (5 min, 10 min, etc.)
Problem is, with the way iOS/iPadOS works, that's not very reliable. I'm using Due for 2 things: remind me when to take my medicine and remind me to put the trash out.
If I open the app, then it will give me notifications usually for about 48-72 hours and then iOS will freeze the app because I'm not in it. I work 100% off the notifications.
And after a phone reboot, if the app isn't running, then I don't get notifications. I rebooted my phone after the upgrade to 26.1, and haven't gotten a single notification since then, because I have not opened the app.
Because of this, I forgot to put the trash out last night.
So, I'd like something with the following features:
1. Nagging notifications of some kind that can ping me on a regular interval of my choosing, but stops when I tell it I completed the action.
2. Needs to reliably work 24×7×365 even after a phone reboot.
3. Absolutely CANNOT have a subnoscription, though a one-time purchase should be fine.
4. If it needs to be something server-side, I prefer it be self-hosted, so I can just run it on the server in my house.
For my medication, I tried to use the medicine part of the Health app. But it doesn't nag. It pops up a notification and that's it. And if it pops up a notification and then I get 10 more, it scrolls off the screen and I don't see it any more. I know I can make it a critical notification. That will move it to the top of the list, but it also makes a horrible screeching noise that will disturb everyone around me.

One AI Overlay app which can replace ChatGPT, Claude and others
🥳 I finally did it. I've released an overlay tool. You can call it from anywhere and at any time! Just use the shortcut, and the overlay will be shown! You don't need to switch between different apps, web folders, and so on.
getvillson.today
You can add your own system prompts and create your own persona. We also have shortcuts for removing or adding images to the background, as well as many other options.
\-----
✨ The complete list of our incredible staff.
• 500+ AI models in one place
• "Battle" and "Side-By-Side" modes will give you the power to compare models' responses
• Create your own assistant by setting up your own System Message
• Transcribe any voice to text in real time or download the sound later
• Whatever you need to summarize any text, create an article, or write a blog post with AI, we can help you
• Get AI-powered, detailed food breakdown - calories, protein, carbs, fat by uploading any photo and asking for a breakdown
• Use AI text input to brainstorm ideas or get answers
• Instant, real-time internet research and AI summarization
• First truly cross-platform AI Chat Bot
• Animated whimsical Characters & app color Themes
🥳 Would you like to see it in action? Check our demo video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBkyPl2O6eo or download it from App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/villson-chat-with-ais/id6748914767?platform=mac
We are seeking feedback, which is why we offer a freemium model. It should be enough for a couple of days for each user!
\-----
In my plans (which is what I'm doing right now) is to create an action mode, where you can also use this thin window or a microphone to instruct it on what to do, and it can do it for you. Unfortunately, if we implement this, the app will no longer be accessible from the App Store due to Apple's policy. That's why we are seeking feedback. We have a prototype of this feature, but it is full of bugs, and I don't know should I even add it?
Or it can be simplified to just voice and screen-shoots to make summary of something like this? WDYT?

PDF READER
I’ve been using pdf expert for 5 years and I love that the files are synced across apple devices. However, when I recently bought a mac, the mac free version does not allow basic annotations like highlight/underline but my ipad and iphone allow this feature.
I don’t need other features like editing pdf, converting file to word etc hence I find the premium subnoscription too expensive. I simply need to annotate my files for studying.
Any recommendations for free or more affordable PDF reader that can:
- sync files across iphone, ipad and mac
- do basic annotations like highlight/underline, insert text
Thank you!

Cork is Nice
Cork https://corkmac.app/ is a Homebrew interface. It is sleek and efficient, completely text-based and no clutter with app icons or logos. I tried (and paid for) a few other similar apps but Cork seems like the best, most reliable choice, at least for me.

Window management app but with automatically updating layout
Hey, i checked App Comparisons, but they didn’t mention this specific functionality.
I’m looking for a window management app that continuously updates a saved layout across all desktops.
When I move a window, the layout should update automatically so that if the power goes out or the system freezes and I need to restart, I can restore the exact last window arrangement, including size and position.
I don't want to have to process a hotkey or something, because I cannot expect when things freeze or power goes out, so I may end up with outdated layout.
Any ideas?
Thank you!

Window Management App to Always Keep App in 2nd Monitor, maximized?
Do any of you know of a windows management app that can point an Mac app at a certain place in an external monitor, where you can assign both the app so that it will always open in that space, and assign the space a size that the app always remembers? I bought Moom, but can't seem to make it work automatically with anything.
Thanks for any suggestions!

State of Shottr?
Hello!
I was just looking at the last Shottr update and it is from Nov. 2024. The dev was fairly active on Reddit but no post or comment since 1 year. Does anyone know if he abandonned the app?
I really love it and it still works fine. I was just wondering...
Sometimes someone knows something... :)

Free (or cheap) SIMPLE photo/image app with rotating function PER DEGREE?
Preview can rotate 90% cw and ccw and flip horizontally/vertically (on Sequoia)
However, I'm looking for a a free (or cheap) simple photo/image app that goes one step further and allows for rotating per degree, or even per tenth of degree.
Does this exist?

Webcam Effects - Paired with FaceTime
I have an Apple Studio M2 Max, paired with a Dell 6K U3224KB monitor with built in web cam. I FaceTime with friends and family members multiple times a week. The camera is excellent quality, but it is WIDE. The Dell app to make camera modifications and zoom is super glitchy and invasive. So for 1 1/2 years it has been on my mind to get software to better control my Dell webcam, with the top priority of being able to zoom in on me so I don't look like a mouse in the corner of the screen. I downloaded this Webcam Effects app for free. The controls are awesome and super intuitive... I can zoom, pan, tilt... and there are a bunch of different LUTs of visual/color profiles, or I can create my own and save. It was exactly what I was looking for... BUT... my adjustments were not showing up in FaceTime. At this point I realized I needed to spend \~$40 to "upgrade" and enable full functionality. Because I knew that finding such an app was not nearly as easy and obvious as one would assume, I pulled the trigger. So far, I am very happy with the result. But during setup, to enable cross-system access, there are about a dozen buttons, switches and selections needed to be made for proper setup. Do I wish it was $20-$30 less expensive? Yes. Do I wish Mac OS already had this functionality built into their OS? Yes. But now my whole MacOS experience is just that much more polished and I know I will be receiving the benefits of this app multiple times a week.

Features:
Live market tracking: See Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other major coins at a glance
24h change: Stay on top of market movements
Custom watchlists: Add or remove your favorite coins
Ultra-lightweight: Only 6 MB, no tracking, no accounts required

Spokenly Free Version is My Voice-to-Text Daily Driver
Spokenly
My voice-to-text use case is almost exclusively dictation (in English) in lieu of typing. There are a lot of trannoscription apps, many of them very powerful with advanced features for enterprise and academic users in multilingual environments. I don't need that. I just need something dependable and free that works well and saves me from having to type so much. After trying a great many apps, I'm most satisfied with Spokenly.
# Key Features for This Use Case
Requires no account \- just download it [from the Mac App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6740315592?pt=118813688&ct=lp-A-2025-10&mt=8), set it up, and start using it. You don't need a username and password for functionality.
Local only, if you want \- If you are privacy-focused, you can download and employ local conversion engines, including Nvidia's Parakeet, even on Intel Macs. I use it regularly on a 2019 MBP. Other local models include:
Various Whisper implementations
Parakeet version for multilingual use
Apple speech analyzer for macOS 26
Bring your own API key for online use \- If you want to use your own API key for OpenAI, Soniox, Grok, or other specialized engines, you can do this and still stay with the free version.
True universal compatibility \- You can dictate text anywhere on the system where you can put a cursor, so Spokenly can fill in forms in your browser, compose emails and messages, and write Reddit posts or blog entries.
Text replacement \- You can set up custom replacements for anything you use regularly that your dictation engine chokes on: proper names, tech terms, place names/addresses, etc.
# Other features
Agentic Control \- If you want to get into setting up workflows that you trigger with your voice, Spokenly has a list of functions that it can automate:
Search Google & YouTube
Query ChatGPT & Claude
Open/Close Apps
Send keystrokes
Open websites
Run Apple shortcuts
Run shell commands
Supports 100 Languages \- I am a native English speaker, but I have rudimentary Spanish skills (thanks to training with the Puerto Rican National Guard when I was in the Army). I can easily include Spanish phrases while dictating in English, and Spokenly changes gears on the fly.
File Upload \- You can upload recorded files and have them transcribed. This is a feature in other apps, and I suggest testing this out if it's something important to you. Uploading a two-minute voice memo you recorded in quiet conditions on your iPhone is going to work differently than a one-hour Teams meeting with 10 different speakers. YMMV.
# Caveats
This is not a plug-and-play app for absolute beginners. You have to choose what model you want to use, and they aren't all the same. Luckily, Spokenly does offer some suggestions. If you go with a local model, you have to download it, and if you're short on hard drive space, the models are about .5 GB on average. If you want advanced online support, you'll need to obtain your own API keys or be prepared to pay for the pro version ($7.99 a month). Also, depending on your configuration, you may experience lag if you're on an older or under-powered device.

How to get ISO file from a DVD
I have been using DiskUtilities in Mac OS to extract ISO from DVD's I got from library.
Now I ran into quite a few DVD's always failed at the end of extraction -- not being able to finish the ISO file.
What should I use, any free safe software I can use to Copy DVD to ISO ? I suspect the newer DVD's have some kind of security features preventing ISO extraction.

hi basically noscript says it all.
Always frustrating when wishing to save to PDF an article from the web only to have images of the article cut in two in overlapping pages.
Any way to kinda do some layout and to rearrange the images so that they fit on a single page ?

I’m looking for a simple app that I can set keyboard commands to trackpad gestures.
In Finder you can go back and forth in folders using keyboard commands. I want an app that will allow me to set those commands as swipe gestures.
I know BetterTouchTool does this but I’d really prefer something cheaper or free that isn’t as complicated.

Thanks r/macapps - your feedback made the Gubb app way better
Hey r/macapps! 👋
Just wanted to drop by with a quick appreciation post.
A little while ago I shared my note-taking app Gubb here and gave out some promo codes. The response was honestly way more than I expected - and the feedback was even better. A bunch of you pointed out quirks, tiny bugs, UI oddities, and features that were missing but would make the app feel more “Mac-native.”
So I took all of that, went heads-down for a week, and pushed an update based directly on what this sub suggested. 🙏
# What’s new (thanks to your comments):
🧠 Offline AI Trannoscription
One of the biggest asks here was: “Can we get voice-to-text without an API key?”
So now Gubb supports local AI models for trannoscription — everything happens on-device, no cloud, no data leaving the Mac.
🔤 Better Fonts & Readability
Multiple users mentioned readability issues. Added new font options and improved text rendering across notes & to-dos.
🖥️ System Tray Access
A small but heavily requested improvement - now you can keep it running quietly and open it instantly.
🪲 Bug Fixes
Clipboard quirks, timer visuals, numbered list formatting, some rendering issues - cleaned up.
⚡ Performance Boosts
Local audio processing is now smoother and the whole app feels snappier.
Not trying to promote anything aggressively here - mostly just wanted to circle back and genuinely thank this community. The quality of feedback from mac users is always on another level. 🙌
For anyone who wants to see the updated version, here’s the Mac App Store link:

And if you want to support the launch, we also just went live on Product Hunt:

(No pressure at all - just sharing for anyone interested.)
# Before I jump back into building:
What note-taking or productivity apps on macOS do you swear by?
And for those who tried Gubb already - what would you love to see next?
Always open to feedback - you all clearly know what makes a good Mac app. 🙌
