Looking for an app that will see what a font looks like before I choose it.
A long time ago Apple had a widget or mini app that you could open on the side so you could see all of the letters of each font type.
Is there anything like that nowadays?
I hope i explained it well enough.

Drafts Wins App of the Year at Mac Stories
[Drafts](https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1435957248?mt=12&at=11l4Cf&ct=site), an app by Agile Tortoise (AKA Greg Pierce), remarkably won [App of the Year for 2025 at Mac Stories](https://www.macstories.net/stories/macstories-selects-2025-recognizing-the-best-apps-of-the-year//#app-of-the-year), a full thirteen years after its release. Three years ago, Drafts was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the same crew. I think it's a real testament to the developer's commitment to continued development and support. The app is currently at version 49, with new features added regularly. Originally solely for iOS, today Drafts is a Universal App with multiple use cases on mobile and desktop/laptops. It's been in the dock of my iPhone for 11 years and on my Mac since its release. It's just about the only place I enter text on my phone because its huge automation catalog enables me to send what I type to other apps with ease.
Drafts has a robust and long-lived community with a lot of smart people generously helping newcomers on the regular. Every single time I have ever had a question about Drafts, either Greg himself or one of the other community regulars has given me the answer.
# My Favorite Features
* Drafts makes a good scratch pad for any temporary text or notes, and it's super useful to have it sync between my Macs and my iOS/iPadOS devices.
* While not a full-fledged notes app, it does have tags and workspaces for organizational purposes, making it a great repository for any frequently used boilerplate text or frequently pasted information such as API keys.
* The ability to copy text from a web page and paste it into drafts, where it's instantly formatted into Markdown, helps me write Reddit and blog posts with a lot less friction.
* My favorite notes app, Obsidian, has a well-deserved reputation for being slow on the draw on iOS. Drafts is the solution to that issue.
# Apps I use With Drafts

In the past, I've also used it with OmniFocus, Bear, ToDoist, TickTick, Gmail, Google Docs, OneNote, Spark email, DevonThink, IAwriter, Notion, Roam Research, Evernote, Twitter, and Facebook.
There are [hundreds of free workflows](https://directory.getdrafts.com/) available in the Drafts actions directory for a long, long list of situations and apps.
# Specific Use Cases
***The Things 3, Fantastical, Day One Combo***
The [Quick Journaling Action Group](https://directory.getdrafts.com/g/1Sd) lets me keep one running note that I can process at day's end to send the individual lines as entries into [Fantastical,](https://flexibits.com/fantastical) [Things 3](https://culturedcode.com/things/) and [Day One](https://dayoneapp.com/). The appropriate parts of one draft get sent to three separate apps with one command.
* Lines starting with "-" are collected and sent to Day One as a journal entry.
* Lines starting with "⁎" are sent to Things inbox.
* Lines starting with "@" are sent to Fantastical.
***Things Parser***
Using [TaskPaper syntax](https://guide.taskpaper.com/getting-started/), I can create a note in Drafts complete with due dates, areas, projects, and tags that get correctly imported into the Things 3 task manager using the [Things Parser.](https://directory.getdrafts.com/a/1DV) I use this with a Drafts template to create daily and weekly checklists for recurring tasks. I also use the action group, Things for Things, which includes actions for:

* This Evening
* Tomorrow
* Pick date
* Work
* House
* Personal
* Pick a Project
* Make a Project
* Selection to Things

I use a couple of other Drafts to Obsidian actions, including [Add to Obsidian Daily Note](https://directory.getdrafts.com/a/2EO) and [Add to Daily Note Plus](https://directory.getdrafts.com/a/2Fc), which add text to my daily note in different ways using a time stamp and a geolocation.
# The Bottom Line
Yes, Drafts Pro is a subnoscription app, and if you want to create custom actions, you are going to have to pony up 1.99M/19.99Y. I would sell plasma to pay for Drafts if I had to. Drafts is also a text-only app. There are no images or file embeds available. You don't have to be a tech writer or a blogger to use it, though. In my former life in IT support, I used it all the time for email, closing tickets, and documentation. You can do an amazing amount of work with Drafts, but you aren't going to master it in a day. There is a learning curve, but in my experience, it's always been fun to see what new things I can do with the app.

NotiSprite Got Its Travel Visa 🎉
I am happy to share that NotiSprite has officially been approved by Apple. Your beloved sprite can now travel from macOS to iPhone and iPad.
The same philosophy applies everywhere. No login, no ads, no data collection. It just works.
If you have already purchased sprites on macOS, they can travel freely to iOS and iPadOS. No extra steps are needed. Just tap Restore Purchases in Settings and all your sprites will appear on your mobile devices.
iOS development is very different from macOS. Apps can be suspended or killed by the OS, and there is no desktop space for a sprite to wander around. This made the implementation challenging. Instead of copying the macOS experience, I designed NotiSprite for iOS around what the platform does best, using Live Activities, Widgets, and Notifications to keep the sprite present and useful.
Pro Tip: If you are using the same Apple ID login into your Mac and iOS or iPadOS, you can add Widgets on your Mac.
Widget on Mac from iOS
With iOS and iPadOS now live, the NotiSprite suite is well underway. The next major piece is NotiSprite Creator, where artists and creators will be able to play with their own sprites on Mac, iPhone, and iPad. If creators choose to, they can also team up with us to distribute their sprites worldwide, reaching 174 countries and supporting 12 languages.
There is still a long way to go, but every dream starts with a first step.
Here is the App Store Link.
Enjoy your sprite on your mobile devices.
This release is a small gift to you all.
Merry Christmas 🎄

Which calendar app are you using right now?
Hey guys,
It's the end of the year, and I'm reviewing the app I'm using.
Which calendar app are you using right now? I really like FantastiCal, but it's a little bit overkill for me...
I'd love to know about you!

In search of a rock solid workflow for Spaces/Virtual Desktops
All I want for Christmas is a way to have apps and Spaces consistently do what I want. I have two, 27 inch displays. On each display, I have enabled four spaces. Ideally, I'd like to be able to link the spaces as pairs so that what's on screen changes on both monitors simultaneously.
## Preferred Layout
Space 1 - Email / Space 5 - Mona, Things3, Messages Space 2 - Obsidian / Space 6 - Firefox, Drafts Space 3 - Calibre / Space 7 - Qspace, <App for downloading Linux ISOs> Space 4 - Vivaldi / Space 8 - Vivaldi, ChatGPT
I want to be able to launch the apps and have the windows open in the same location in the same space every time.
## What I've Tried
In System settings, I have Displays have separate spaces turned on. I also have Automatically arrange spaces turned off. I do not use Stage Manager.
I have tried [Moom\]( https://manytricks.com/moom/) because it has a feature to create layouts involving multiple displays, but it does not consistently open apps in the correct space or even move apps already opened to the correct space.
I have also tried [Spencer\](https://macspencer.app), which claims to open and move apps to the spaces you designate. It consistently gives me error messages.
I tried [Stay\]( https://apps.apple.com/us/app/stay/id435410196?mt=12 ) which is supposed to let you designate a location for specific apps. It is not dependably consistent.
I just found the FOSS app, [Flashspace,\](https://www.reddit.com/r/macapps/s/uOg1Bk5KBb) which promises to replace Spaces, but I have not tested it yet.
# Any Ideas or Tips?
I’m also looking for a way, any way, to stop random Finder windows from opening on Desktop clicks or space changes. I’ve tried Hammerspoon and BetterTouchTool with no luck.

Move, zoom, and snap windows. Arrange windows in layouts. Auto-adjust to display setups.

Release ahsk - Flow state study app that stops context switching (free for students)
Yo'all
Just released my first Mac app after spending 6 months building it for myself during college.
The problem I was trying to solve: I'd be studying, have a question, open ChatGPT in my browser, see a X notification, and 30 minutes later I'm watching YouTube. Every. Single. Time.
I realized the real issue wasn't discipline (maybe i have adhd) - it was that I kept having to LEAVE what I was doing to get help. Context switching was destroying my focus.
ahsk keeps you in flow state:
\- Select any text, hit Opt+Shift+A → instant AI explanation appears (no tab switching)
\- Focus mode that actually terminates distracting apps (Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc.)
\- Auto-generates flashcards from whatever you're reading using spaced repetition
Built with SwiftUI, runs on Apple Silicon + Intel. Notarized and sandboxed.
Free tier with 100 AI queries/month. Student tier is $8/mo for unlimited.
Download: ahsk
You can check all the features here
Genuinely would love feedback from this community - you all know Mac apps better than anyone. What am I missing? What would make this actually useful for you?
Happy to answer any questions!

Any easy to use photo editing app?
I switched to MacOS for about two years now. I have to take screenshots from time to time. It’s frustrating when have to quickly add some text, cover some personal info simply covering it by drawing a solid rectangle. These were easy to do when I was using windows paint. I’ve tried using Gimp. But it’s harder to use than the e Preview app.
Is there any app you’d recommend? I’m willing to pay if it’s easy to use and the price is reasonable.
Edit: sorry for using the wrong flair. But cannot edit it

VaultSort: free file organization + storage insights for macOS
Hi r/MacApps,
I’m the developer of **VaultSort**, a macOS app I built to help clean up, organize, and secure files without subnoscriptions or cloud dependencies.
VaultSort includes a **free version** with genuinely useful features:
* Automatic file and folder organization
* Disk and folder analysis to see what’s taking up space
* Large file discovery
* Storage breakdown and directory browsing
If you want more advanced tools, there’s a one-time paid upgrade that unlocks:
* **Duplicate file detection and removal** (great for reclaiming space)
* **Secure file deletion and disk shredding** so files can’t be recovered
* **File encryption and decryption with AES-256**, including optional **YubiKey / hardware key support**
Everything runs locally on your Mac, no subnoscriptions, and no data leaves your machine.
For the holidays, I’m offering **30% off the paid version** with the code **XMAS** (normally $15.99). The discount is valid until **Christmas Day** and might be a solid upgrade for yourself or a practical gift for someone else.

Some Cool Things You Can Do if You Have the Right App
# Automatically Open Archive Today When you Click on Any Link to a Paywalled Article.
Most experienced users know that you can copy the URL from a paywalled story from The New York Times, Washington Post, or other paywalled sites and paste it into [Archive.today](https://archive.ph) to read the article. There are [browser extensions that will automate that in various browsers](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/archivetoday-automator/mmhadhnchpgicjlmlcdfaapkekknnkha?hl=en-US&utm_source=ext_sidebar) if you click on them in the toolbar. But you can remove even that bit of friction if you are a Safari user by installing [Redirect Web](https://appaddict.app/post/redirect-web-for-safari). Take some time to set that up, and anytime you click on a paywalled article from a frequently visited site, it will open, ready to read at the Internet Archive. If you are not a Safari user, look in the browser extensions available for whatever you use for something similar.
# Control The Order In Which Your Login Items Launch and Create Pauses, If Needed
Apple decided that your login items should launch in alphabetical order, and it doesn't let you change that. It also doesn't let you introduce pauses between apps launching. There is not a native way to do that. The only thing you can do is hold down the shift key when logging in to cancel all your login items, launch agents tied to login, and any apps set to resume at login. With the free app, [Startup Manager Pro,](https://appaddict.app/post/free-startup-manager-with-many-options) you get all the control back. You choose the order in which your apps start. You can introduce pauses if you want to. You can even cancel your login items without holding down the shift key. Finally, you can have different sets of login items for different workflows if you so desire.
# Subscribe to YouTube Channels and Make Playlists Without Using a Google Account
I am almost totally de-Googled these days. I don't use it for search, email, cloud storage, or to create documents. But I have to confess, I still get some value out of YouTube. I can do it without sacrificing my privacy, though. I use [FreeTube](https://appaddict.app/post/freetube-maybe-the-most-underrated-app), which scrapes YouTube content through a variety of methods. It can be a fluid landscape because Google really wants info on you, and they want you to watch ads unless you pay for YouTube Premium. In short, FreeTube isn't always going to work flawlessly, but for the most part, you'll be OK.
# Never Accidentally Quit an App Again
It never ceases to aggravate me that the Q and the W are right beside each other on the keyboard. I used to quit my browser all the time when I was just trying to close a tab. Then I discovered a sweet little AppleScript that I can tie to ⌘+Q with [BetterTouchTool](https://appaddict.app/post/better-touch-tool-favorite) ($14), which gives me a confirmation popup, "Do you really want to quit this app?" Then, super-dev, Sindre Sorhus, introduced the same feature in [Supercharge](https://appaddict.app/post/using-supercharge), his $18 multi-function must-have menu bar utility.
# Share a Scratchpad and Clipboard Between your Mac and Your iPhone
There are multiple ways to do this. I currently use another Sindre Sorhus app, [Scratchpad](https://appaddict.app/post/scratchpad-floating-notes-but-better) ($8), because it has a bunch of other useful features. I can also vouch for [Scrap Paper](https://appaddict.app/post/scrap-paper) ($4.99), which I used for a long time, and there's also the free version of [Drafts](https://appaddict.app/post/drafts-wins-app-of-the-year-at-mac-stories) that offers this functionality. While you're at it, you should also get a syncing clipboard app. I can recommend [PastePal](https://appaddict.app/post/battle-of-the-clipboard-managers), a $14.99 one-time purchase. If you also have a PC in the mix and you want to sync your PC clipboard with your phone clipboard, check out [Clipboard
Clipboard Fusion - The Windows to iPhone Solution
If you are all in on the Apple ecosystem, you have plenty of choices for clipboard managers with iOS companions to simplify sharing between your Mac and your iOS device: PastePal (my favorite) and Paste.app are two well respected noscripts.

Appreciation post for DockDoor! If you're using a window switcher or dock replacement app, you should really check it out. I tried all of them and this one is the most feature rich and stable one. Open source really rocks!
Hey there,
I just wanted to make a review post about DockDoor since I managed to contribute some features to it recently which I think made it much better :)
The best thing about this app is that it doesn't replace the native macOS dock or switcher unlike many other apps which makes it way more reliable and performant.
You can enable the custom window switcher if you'd like more customization or stick to the cmd+tab enhancement mode. It's VERY customizable in all aspects and you can really make it your own.
The dev is an expert on macOS swift development and doesn't let any AI slop in. He reviewed my code thoroughly and gave me great constructive feedback which I had to implement before getting my features merged in.
Window Previews shown when hovering over the native macOS dock
The custom window switcher mode with window previews. You can show it as a list too.
macOS native cmd+tab enhancement mode
Indicator for the active app and window + hover to show list of windows and switch between them
Why this is app is my favorite app on macOS:
I switched to macOS \~7 months ago and I've been enjoying the battery life, awesome trackpad/screen, and performance when unplugged.
But as a long-time windows power user the window management and some aspects about the dock left a lot to be desired.
Examples of issues I was facing and how DockDoor solved them:
1. Default cmd+tab makes it hard to switch back to a window that was minimized.
While DockDoor shows all of your windows when you alt tab, even minimized ones.
2. Can't see previews of the windows while switching with cmd + tab. Need to use mission control which doesn't show minimized apps.
DockDoor has 2 modes: Window Switcher Replacement OR Native Cmd+Tab Enhancement. You can use either one and get window previews!
3. No indicator for the currently active app in the dock
DockDoor shows a completely configurable bar below the active dock in the icon (contributed by me :)
4. Hovering over the dock icon doesn't allow switching between windows or performing actions like closing/minimizing/maximizing (right click is often slow and also doesn't allow actions on windows)
You can just hover and see all the windows (preview or list possible). You'll also see action buttons. It's one of the most useful features of this app.
5. Not able to search for a window to access is quickly
When using the Window Switcher Replacement you can just hit / to fuzzy search all your windows.
I also faced stability or UX issues with apps like Alttab, 1piece, Sidebar and many others which made me keep looking until I found DockDoor which is one of the most stable macOS enhancement apps I've used. It always shows all my of windows, never lags, and never crashed even once. The dev is very active on Github too so if you do find something please report it there.
I was missing list view and few other things from Alttab and 1piece when I switched to DockDoor but I managed to get them implemented and merged in a short while with the ejbills's help and his modifications.
There's a ton more features that were added recently, here are some of the highlights:
Added customizable Trackpad swipe gesture window controls
Space-based window filtering
Fuzzy searching to find a window
Allow the app to work without any screen recording permissions for improved
