Caveat emptor

There are so many applications out there, and I was wondering what do you do for security when downloading and trying them? It scares me and reminds me of the windows ecosystem of yore when everyone had tons of shareware apps on their machine that were rarely used.

I am also wondering why so many people seem to use so many apps? What do you do for a living that requires so many different apps? I am a windows software developer on windows. I don't have anything installed on my machine (corporate policy). I get around a 100 emails a day and I can't do a blank or automated reply. I don't have to move source files around, they are in a repository. The only 3rd party things I have are a diff tool and some special vendor products for software. Can some of you explain your use cases and how much savings you really get from all these apps?

Raycast & Alfred: the eternal struggle

For decades we have had many near religious arguments in tech. Mac vs PC is of course the most famous, but there are others.

Within the macOS community there is a similar struggle between Raycast and Alfred. Frankly it’s exhausting.

Personally, and I know that this is shocking, I just prefer Spotlight. Although every time either is mentioned there seems to be an immediate reaction and “discussion” about which is better. It’s exhausting.

Which one is better isn’t really the question. The real question seems to be which has the most capability for each Individual user and workflow.

I built a macOS app that takes automated screenshots (25% OFF SALE)

Hey guys,
I made a Mac app that helps you capture anything on your screen. Even content that can’t be copied, exported, or printed and turn it into a clean, searchable PDF.

https://reddit.com/link/1pwgj39/video/a9stb4rlgm9g1/player

All you do is set where you want it to capture, and how you want it to switch pages (click a key or left-click somewhere) and how many pages you have and Quilt takes care of the rest!

What Quilt lets you do:

Capture a specific window or draw a custom area
Set countdowns, delays, and how many screenshots to take
Automate key presses or mouse clicks between captures
Review and clean up screenshots before export
Export as a searchable PDF, GIF, image set, or ZIP
Works completely offline, and is built natively for macOS

Get started for free 👉 quiltformac.com

Quilt Pro is also 25% off for boxing day, holidays & the new years for lifetime! Would love to hear what you think! Happy to answer questions or take feature requests.

Backdrop App

Hoping someone can help, I pinged the dev, no response.

I have 3 monitors, I want only one monitor to have a moving wallpaper, and the other two just static. I cannot figure it out in the app. Setting the wallpaper in the Mac settings gets overridden when you start the backdrop app again.

Anyone with hints or can tell me where I’m missing the way to do it, would make me very happy! Thanks.

I built an app to update old/compromised passwords automatically - The Password App Free

Hey r/macapps! I've been building The Password App - an AI-powered tool that automates changing passwords across websites.

What it does:

Import your passwords from any manager (CSV)
AI navigates sites and changes passwords for you
Watch it work in a visible browser window through a companion chrome extension
Import updated passwords back into your password manager

Why I built it: After a breach notification, I had to change 50+ passwords manually. Took 6 hours. I was thinking there has to be a better way to do it automatically and securely with data privacy top of mind.

Tech stack:

Electron + Python
browser-use library
Runs with a local-first approach meaning your passwords never leave your Mac

Link: [
https://thepassword.app](https://thepassword.app)

Would love feedback from fellow Mac users. I'm envisioning this app to transform into a digital guardian app. Some other features I'm considering are:

Reset password automatically for incorrect credentials
Automatically email websites to request your data to be deleted
Scan and alert about security risks in other chrome extensions

Looking for the Modern Day Equivalent of PhotoPresenter

Looking for the Modern Day Equivalent of PhotoPresenter, does anyone know of any photo / slideshow software that will allow you to present different images and movies in a tiled fashion per monitor that can change at random?

Link: https://web.archive.org/web/20070112191946/https://arizona-software.ch/applications/photopresenter/en/

Discover why PhotoPresenter will change the way you present your photos and movies!

Animated Slideshows
Present your photos with style

PhotoPresenter provides several great looking slideshow themes you can choose from to present you photos either efficiently and soberly, or with amazing transition effects.

Navigation
Navigate quickly and easily

You want to switch to another slide without abandoning the slideshow? Just hit the command key (⌘) and select the slide you want to jump to! You can use either the mouse or the keyboard to scroll, quickly navigate and select the desired image.

Panorama
Scroll panoramic pictures

Isn't it frustrating to see a beautiful panorama shrunk to fit the screen? During standard slideshows, PhotoPresenter enlarges panoramic pictures and scrolls them either horizontally or vertically. Experience afresh your wonderful panoramas with this breathtaking effect! And naturally, if you want to scroll back and forth, just pause the slideshow with the spacebar and use the arrow keys to move the picture as you want.

Movies
Play movies in your slideshow

View both pictures and movies within the same slideshow. No need to switch back and forth between different programs to play your movies. They will just play as they appear on the screen during the slideshow. To pause or rewind, simply use the spacebar and the left arrow key.

CD, Folders, etc.
Pictures and movies from anywhere

With PhotoPresenter, you can not only view your iPhoto library, but also display the content of any other location, such as folders on your local drive, CD, etc. Removable media (CD or DVD) will be automatically detected as you insert them in your computer. To add a specific folder, just drag the icon from the Finder and drop it where you want into the source list of PhotoPresenter.

Exclude elements
Exclude elements from your slideshow

You want to exclude some pictures from your slideshow without having each time to carefully select the desired elements? Simply select the unwanted elements and hit the backspace key: those elements won't appear anymore in any slideshows. To include elements back is as easy as to exclude them: simply hit the Backspace key again. And of course, PhotoPresenter will remember excluded elements from any location, even from read-only media such as CD or DVD.

Multiple displays
Presentation on multiple displays

Make breathtaking presentations using several displays: not only can PhotoPresenter display its animated slideshows on each attached monitor, it can also treat all monitors as a single large display!

Another homebrew GUI? Why?

Hello and merry christmas r/macapps,

i am a developer that started in the 90s, i had a few years break lately working into the management in a big multinational company and recently came back. This is my first venture with Swift and decided to build a homebrew GUI. A lot of good and awesome apps already out there but i wanted to consolidate some of the features i liked into one.

So I built Taphouse - a fully native macOS app in SwiftUI. Here's what makes it different:

Actually native

\- Pure SwiftUI, no Electron, no web views

\- \~15MB vs 150MB+ for Electron apps

\- Instant launch, uses minimal resources

\- Follows Apple HIG, supports Dark Mode, feels like a real Mac app

Complete feature set in one app

\- Package management (browse, search, install, uninstall, upgrade)

\- Services management with auto-refresh (monitor and control all your brew services)

\- Taps management (add/remove repositories)

\- Brewfile import/export (migrate your setup to a new Mac)

\- Quarantine management (fix "app is damaged" issues)

\- Diagnostics (brew doctor, disk usage, cache cleanup)

\- Dependency tree visualization

\- Mac App Store integration (via `mas` CLI) - first Homebrew GUI with this!

Quality of life features

\- Menu bar icon with update badge

\- Background update checks with notifications

\- Bulk operations (select multiple packages)

\- Favorites and notes on packages

\- Installation history

Services dashboard

If you run things like MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, or nginx through Homebrew, you'll love the Services view. See all your services at a glance with running/stopped/error counts, start/stop/restart with one click, and enable auto-refresh to monitor status changes in real-time (configurable from 10 seconds to 5 minutes). No more typing `brew services list` constantly.

Mac App Store integration

Something I haven't seen in any other Homebrew GUI - if you have [mas\](https://github.com/mas-cli/mas) installed (`brew install mas`), Taphouse can manage your App Store apps too. Browse installed apps, check for updates, search and install new ones, upgrade all with one click. Your Brewfile exports can even include MAS apps, so you can restore your entire setup (Homebrew + App Store) on a new Mac. It's the unified package manager experience I always wanted.

Business model

Free version does the basics (install, uninstall, upgrade, services). Pro is $4.99 one-time (not a subnoscription) for power user features. 14-day trial included.

I know "developer builds app" posts can be hit or miss here, but I genuinely use this daily and built it because I wanted it to exist. Happy to answer any questions or take feedback. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Organizing 2,000 Apps: Still Searching for an App That Generates Keywords (Tags)!

Is there an application that suggests keywords (tags) for Mac and iOS Store apps? This would be very useful for saving apps with keywords to return to them later when one searches for certain applications in a specific field. I would really appreciate any advice. It doesn't have to be an app, but I'm tired of giving ChatGPT the same prompt every time: "Give me keywords for this app?" I want something more practical.

Another question: Where do you store the links to apps, whether you've purchased them, got them for free, or wish to buy them in the future (wishlist)? Do you keep them in a notes app, a bookmarking app, or a database app like Collections?

I currently have about two thousand apps, which include purchased apps, free ones, and those I want to get in the future. I'm starting to feel that Raindrop has become a bit slow due to the numerous saved links. Hence, I'm thinking about using the Anybox app and dedicating it solely to saving links for Mac Store and iOS Store apps. I would appreciate any advice you can provide.

Snaps Of Apps 1.16: multi‑display window manager with snapping/grids + workspace snapshots — now includes a free 7‑day trial

Hi r/macapps — I’m the developer of Snaps Of Apps, a lightweight menu bar window manager for macOS focused on multi‑monitor workflows (snapping, tiling, and saving/restoring workspace layouts).

100% Off promo code below

I just shipped v1.16, and the big change is that it now includes a free 7‑day trial, so you can actually test it in your real multi‑display setup before buying.

# What Snaps Of Apps does (quick overview)

Window snapping & tiling across multiple displays (keyboard + mouse workflows)
Grids / custom snap areas for consistent layouts
Workspace Snapshots: save a working set of apps/windows and restore later (useful for “modes” like Coding/Design/Meetings)

# What’s new in 1.16

Free 7‑day trial (so you can evaluate before purchasing)
Custom grid/tile improvements so custom layouts behave consistently with standard presets
Moom-style custom grid editor fixes (better editing/rename/save/delete reliability + grid fidelity)
Snapshot reliability improvements (cleaner launch/quit behavior across more apps)
License entry UX fix (Cmd+V paste works properly in the license field)
Still a menu bar app (no Dock icon)

# 100% limited-time promo code (optional)

If you try it and decide you like it, here’s a 100% off promo code (limited availability):

Promo code: `CAXZPHD`

How to redeem:

1. Install from the site: [`
https://www.snapsofapps.com`](https://www.snapsofapps.com)
2. Open the app → Buy Software
3. Enter code `CAXZPHD` → checkout total updates to (-100%)
(while they last)

If anyone tries it, I’d appreciate feedback on:

multi‑monitor snapping feel (especially mixed DPI setups)
snapshot restore behavior (apps you’d want better support for)
any “wish list” features for v1.17+

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

I built a macOS app to localize your iOS/macOS & Laravel apps, looking for feedback from fellow devs

Hi all

I’m an indie dev from Belgium and I recently shipped Parlo, a macOS app that helps developers localize their iOS, macOS, and Laravel apps in just a few minutes.

The idea came from my own workflow localization was always one of those things I postponed because it just felt tedious copy pasting translations from Google Translate or Deepl. I wanted something fast, cheap and dev-friendly.

Feature overview

* Import your localization files and translate them into 30+ languages
* Choose between:
* Magic Mode (Parlo handles translations for you)
* Bring Your Own Keys (DeepL, OpenAI, Google Translate)
* Keeps placeholders & pluralization intact
* Preview and export clean localization files
* A bit of fun polish (particle effects, skeuomorphic receipts 😄)

I think this app might be useful to a lot of devs, because localizing apps has had a noticeable impact for me in terms of App Store visibility and revenue.

I’m looking for:

* Feedback on the UX
* Feature ideas (especially from other Mac / iOS devs)

If you want to try it, Parlo includes 10 free credits so you can test it without committing.

App Store link:

Getting the Most from Ebooks, A Mostly Free Workflow

[Ebook Workflow](https://preview.redd.it/wqorcnrcds9g1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=25497963f7c634a68de4b5c4a967eece5c217232)

One of my passions over the past few months has been growing and curating my collection of ebooks. I've loved reading longer than I've loved computers, but now I love both and this is how I married the two together. As a Mac and iOS user who also has a self-hosted server, I've tried a lot of different apps in an ongoing effort to craft the best workflow.

# Background

I was an Amazon customer for a long time, but in February of 2025, the company decided it would [no longer allow customers to download their books](https://appaddict.app/post/use-calibre-to-back-up-your-kindle-books-before-february-26) as user-maintained files and limited them to access with Internet-connected Amazon-approved devices, and implicitly acknowledged that they could and would remove your access to your purchases at their discretion. Before their deadline arrived, I downloaded a thousand+ ebooks and audiobooks I'd purchased over the years. I removed the digital rights management restrictions from my property. Now I can use whatever device I want. I can convert the books to different formats and I can loan them to friends, just like the physical books I purchase at brick-and-mortar stores.

# Getting New Books

You can let your conscience be your guide. I still purchase books sold without DRM from various sources, but I also use sources that Reddit would rather I not mention. Feel free to check out [AppAddict](https://appaddict.app/post/getting-the-most-from-ebooks-a-mostly-free-workflow) if you would like to access that information.

# Library Management

Although some UI snobs don't care for its idiosyncratic interface, I use and love [Calibre](https://appaddict.app/post/calibre-keeps-getting-better) and its many plugins. I can't think of anything I want it to do that it can't handle. Its killer features include:

* Metadata including covers, tags, authors, publishers, series, publication date, format, acquisition date, ratings, and custom fields for user-defined data like read/unread.
* Built-in OPDS server for use with third-party apps providing remote access for e-reader software and downloaders.
* Easy to craft and save complex queries-- e.g., science fiction books about time travel published in the 80s rated 3 stars or above or biographies of rock musicians from England published by Oxford Press.
* Import covers and metadata from dozens of sources.
* Combine books to make your own omnibus editions.
* Create virtual libraries for ease of management. Books can belong to multiple virtual libraries.
* Supports a huge number of formats: PUB, PDF, MOBI, AZW, AZW3, DOCX, RTF, TXT, HTML, HTM, ODT, LIT, FB2, PDB, CBZ, CBR, DJVU, CHM, HTMLZ.
* Offers format conversion.
* Remove DRM via a plugin.

Apple's own Books app lets you import and read only three formats: pub, PDF, and iBook. It chokes on DRM. It also lacks queries beyond a basic search for authors and noscripts. It is very much geared towards selling you new books from Apple's bookstore. I only use it for backup.

# Remote Access

I use an Intel MacBook as a daily driver for ebook management. When I am at home, I can use its built-in web server to browse my library on my iPhone and iPad. For remote access and to share with friends and family, I use Syncthing to keep a mirrored copy of my database on my self-hosted server. I run [Calibre-Web](https://neilturner.me.uk/2023/11/22/managing-e-books-with-calibre-web/) a free third-party app in a Docker container that I connected to the Internet with a free Cloudflare zero-trust tunnel. Calibre-Web has a built-in OPDS service that connects to apps like Readest and MapleRead, so that I can do queries, read metadata, and download books on a device from anywhere with Internet connectivity.

# Reading

I've been using [MapleRead SE](https://www.maplepop.com/web/mr/index.php)($8.99), the edition of the software with the biggest feature set. Other editions don't handle
