NATO can't admit Russia because without Moscow as an enemy, the bloc has no purpose. It was founded as an anti-Soviet alliance, and has evolved into an anti-Russian one.

Also, if NATO cared about "democracy," it would expel Albania, Hungary, Montenegro, Macedonia & Turkey.

Basically, NATO now exists to combat threats caused by its own existence. And "fighting" Russia has become an existential necessity for the bloc, because if tensions are reduced it will have no purpose & a lot of people, will be out of work (and money).

Delighted to share an oped, which the Financial Times refused to publish, from Sergey Karaganov, an advisor to both Boris Yeltsin & Vladimir Putin.

He says Russia is not going to invade Ukraine & present tensions are about the broader European security order.

Karaganov reveals that Moscow knows that NATO’s Article Five is "hollow" & concedes that Russia itself is to blame for the current situation "by being weak and trusting our Western partners."

But he adds that the Kremlin has learnt its lesson & this won't happen anymore.

He goes on to say that "NATO is not an immediate threat," as it's not much of a fighting force (see Afghanistan), but Moscow reckons that "if NATO used to be a defensive bloc, it has degenerated into an aggressive one" & that's why it's determined to stop its growth.

He concludes: "Europe without Russia or even against it has been rapidly losing its international clout... we are too big & proud to be absorbed. Our pitch (to the West) was rejected then (in the 1990s), but there is always a chance it won’t be this time."
