Canada’s job growth stalls in December, while wages accelerate

Canada’s labour market finished 2023 in the doldrums, with employers pulling back on hiring as part of a broader economic slowdown driven by high interest rates.

The country added just 100 net new jobs in December, after an increase of 25,000 in November and 18,000 in October, according to Statistics Canada. Bay Street analysts were expecting an increase of 13,500 jobs last month.

The unemployment rate remained at 5.8 per cent. It has risen consistently over the past year as rapid population growth has outstripped job creation. But last month, this dynamic was offset by a decline in labour-force participation, keeping the unemployment rate steady.

The stall in job growth appears to shore up the case for the Bank of Canada to start cutting interest rates in the coming quarters.

🇨🇦🇵🇸Toronto police chief apologizes after officer delivers coffee to anti-Israel protesters

Toronto’s Police Chief said he has ordered a “thorough review” of the police service’s response to demonstrations that took place across the city on Saturday following criticism of a video showing Toronto cops delivering coffee to anti-Israel protesters.

Questions have been raised regarding one particular interaction between officers and a person on the Avenue Road bridge during an hours-long demonstration. Whatever the intent, the impact has been to cause concern and confusion and for that I am sorry.

Chief Myron Demkiw wrote in a statement.

🔌🌱Japanese automaker Honda considering multibillion-dollar EV plant in Canada

Japanese automaker Honda is considering building an electric-vehicle factory in Canada, which is scrambling to become a leader in all elements of the EV market.

Japanese news group Nikkei reported Sunday that spending on the potential EV plant, which may also produce electric batteries, could reach $18.5-billion. This would be one of Honda’s largest investments in the race to catch up with U.S. and European rivals in EV production, the media outlet said.

A statement from federal Innovation, Science and Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne says the fact that this country merits consideration “is a testament to Canada’s growing reputation as a green supplier of choice and global EV leader.”

Nikkei reported that Honda is looking at several potential sites, including next to an existing automobile factory in Ontario. The automaker expects to decide by the end of 2024, with the new facility to go on stream as early as 2028, the Japanese outlet said. Honda has a manufacturing facility in Alliston, Ont.

Federal Court expands definition of espionage in decision to bar a Chinese student from Canada

A Federal Court judge has concluded that a Chinese engineering student is a potential spy and cannot enter Canada in a ruling that broadens the definition of espionage and has potentially wide consequences for foreign researchers.

The student, Yuekang Li, proposed to study under a leading researcher at the University of Waterloo and take what he learns back to China to improve its public-health system.

But Federal Court Chief Justice Paul Crampton said Mr. Li’s plan fits the definition of “non-traditional” espionage – even without evidence he ever engaged in or had been trained in spying, or that his research has military uses.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service has publicly warned that Beijing is threatening Canada’s national security and intellectual property in sensitive areas, including biopharmaceuticals.

Rebel News personality arrested after an encounter with Chrystia Freeland

Rebel News personality David Menzies was arrested Monday for allegedly assaulting a police officer while trying to ask Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland questions about the government's decision to leave the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) off the designated terrorist entity list.

The website posted a video of Menzies briefly colliding with a police officer in Richmond Hill, Ont., while trying to question Freeland about the IRGC.

The video of Monday's encounter appears to show an officer stepping into Menzies' path while the media personality was carrying his microphone in the parking lot of a suburban strip mall.

That officer subsequently grabbed Menzies by his lapels, pushed him against a wall and accused him of assault while putting him under arrest.

It was determined that no credible security threat existed and Menzies was released unconditionally shortly thereafter.

💸📈Interest costs for federal debt soar 37% to new highs

Interest payments on the national debt soared more than 37 per cent in the third quarter of 2023 over the previous year, new data published by Statistics Canada show, as rising interest rates collided with Ottawa’s record borrowing to drive the cost of maintaining public debt to new highs.

General government debt, including subnational governments, increased a combined 20.7 per cent, as provinces and territories experienced a more modest 10.7-per-cent average growth in interest costs.

The federal government spent $11.3 billion in interest payments during 2023’s third quarter, compared to $8.3 billion for the same quarter in 2022.

General government surpluses decreased by $3.4 billion due to lower revenue growth and higher expenses, driven mainly by rising interest charges and wage increases for government workers.

Quebec rejects proposal to have armed security guards in Montreal Jewish schools, places of worship

The Quebec government is rejecting a proposal from multiple local politicians who called for special permission to allow Jewish schools and houses of worship to hire armed security guards.

The idea comes from a growing sense of unease following recent attacks in the Jewish community, however, the province says security is best left up to the police.

Officials representing Côte Saint-Luc, Hampstead, the Town of Mount Royal, and Côte-des-Neiges are preparing an action plan to address the Jewish community's concerns over safety.

Among the measures in a draft version of the plan is to grant Jewish schools and houses of worship temporary permission to hire off-duty police officers as armed security.

Public servants warned Trudeau government about effects of high immigration targets

The records, obtained by the Canadian Press, revealed that the federal immigration department analyzed the negative effects high immigration would have on the economy, housing and services, before the Trudeau government prepared its newcomer targets for 2023 to 2025.

The analysis cautioned that housing construction had long since fallen behind the pace of population growth in 2022.

In Canada, population growth has exceeded the growth in available housing units. As the federal authority charged with managing immigration, IRCC policy-makers must understand the misalignment between population growth and housing supply, and how permanent and temporary immigration shapes population growth.

reads the documents.

The Bank of Canada conducted its own analysis and came to a similar conclusion in December.

The Trudeau government decided to raise the number of annual permanent residents in Canada to 500,000 per year, nearly doubling the targets set in 2015.

Civilian staff for Canadian military bases in Ontario and Quebec on strike over wages

Nearly 500 civilian workers on Canadian military bases in Ontario and Quebec began a strike today over wages and job security.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Union of National Defence Employees say members hit the picket lines as of 6:30 a.m. Eastern time this morning.

The strike will affect Canadian Forces bases in Kingston, Ont., Montreal, Ottawa, and other cities.

PSAC national president Chris Aylward says members are taking job action to get the collective agreement that they deserve.

The union says employees in the Non-Public Funds agency are paid significantly less than workers doing similar jobs in the core federal public service, and they have been without a contract since 2022.

Ethics committee to meet this week to discuss probe on Justin Trudeau's latest trip to Jamaica

MPs will meet Wednesday to discuss Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s holiday vacation to Jamaica that was a $84,000 gift from family friends.

Michael Barrett, a Conservative MP and ethics critic, said in a video posted on X that the parliamentary committee on ethics is being recalled this week because “it’s extremely important” that MPs find out if Trudeau has misled Canadians or the ethics commissioner.

If he’s got nothing to hide, there is no reason he cannot release the correspondence he had with the ethics commissioner. There’s no reason why he can’t give Canadians and parliamentarians the truth about this.

said Barrett.
