MPs overwhelmingly vote down proposed excess profits tax on grocery chains
An NDP motion calling for a windfall tax on large grocery retailers was soundly defeated in the House on Wednesday.
The motion was originally passed by the finance committee after Liberal and Bloc MPs backed former New Democrat Daniel Blaikie’s proposal calling for an excess profits tax that would “put money back in the people’s pocket with a GST rebate.”
The Liberals and Bloc Québécois teamed up with Conservative MPs to defeat the NDP motion, which fell by a margin of 285 to 26.
