A Canadian citizen reportedly has been killed by Israeli troops in southern Israel after brandishing a knife at them.

Security camera footage showed the man rushing at three armed Israeli security officers before he was shot dead.

Israeli Army Radio reported that the man – identified as a “Canadian Muslim citizen” – arrived in the country as a tourist on Sunday.

🩺 Quebec doctors are abandoning the public system in record numbers

A record number of physicians opted out of the public medicare system in Quebec last year, with private medical specialists charging patients for a wide range of procedures, from orthopedic surgery and radiological exams to colonoscopies and dermatology consultations.

A total of 780 general practitioners and specialists are “non-participants” in the public system and no longer bill the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec for their services, up by nearly 22 per cent from 641 the year before, according to a list compiled by RAMQ as of July 12. That represents the biggest single-year increase on record.

🎓Foreign student permits are already outpacing 2023's record numbers

🔹By the end of 2023, 682,420 study permits had been granted to foreign students.

Canada has been granting the vast majority of permits to India, with 278,335 going to students from that country in 2023, a number nearly five times more than to students from China, the second-highest country of origin, who were granted 58,230 permits in 2023.

Canada’s third-most popular source of international students in 2023 was Nigeria, with 37,575 permits handed out in 2023, followed by the Philippines with 33,830, and Nepal at 15,920.

🔹During the first five months of 2024, Indian students were granted 91,510 permits, more than the 85,805 granted over the same period last year.

Chinese students received 21,240 permits in the first five months of this year, compared to 15,565 granted between January and May 2023.

Nigerians received 12,450 study permits by May 2024, up from 8,150 by May 2023.

For the Philippines, 10,140 permits were granted so far in 2024, up from 9,300 over the same period of time last year.

34% of Canadians say they would vote for Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election, including just 1 in 4 people in Quebec (27%), where support for Trump is lowest.

The province where Trump has the most support is Alberta (45%).

A majority of Conservative Party of Canada supporters (55%) say they would support Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election on Nov. 5, significantly lower than those supporting the Liberals (17%), NDP (13%) and Bloc Québécois (20%).

💰Two-thirds of Canadians 'desperately' need interest rates to go down

A new survey says the Bank of Canada's recent interest rate cut did little to change Canadians' negative perceptions about their personal finances.

Two-thirds of respondents say they desperately need interest rates to go down, as more than half indicate they are concerned rates may not fall quickly enough to provide the financial relief they require.

46 per cent of Canadians are $200 or less away from failing to meet all their financial obligations, while three-in-ten say they already can’t cover their bills and debt payments.

2 Alberta men charged with uttering threats against Trudeau online

A 67-year-old Edmonton man has been charged for allegedly posting threats to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh.

The man is facing three Criminal Code counts of uttering threats against a person, RCMP said in a news release Monday.

After a separate investigation, a 23-year-old Calgary man was charged on June 6 for allegedly posting threats to kill Trudeau on X. He is scheduled to appear in a Calgary courtroom on Tuesday.

Court documents show federal immigration officials warned that the government risked undermining the temporary immigration system with the design of the emergency visa program for war-displaced Ukrainians.

Immigration Department staff raised the concern in a memo to Sean Fraser, immigration minister at the time, shortly after the program was announced.

The documents were disclosed as part of a lawsuit against the federal government by two Afghan Canadians, who allege Canada discriminated against Afghan refugees by treating them differently than it did Ukrainians.

The memos outline the design of the Ukraine visa program, which allowed an unlimited number of Ukrainians and their family members to come to Canada.

An encroaching wildfire that forced thousands of people to flee the community of Jasper overnight is now burning 12 kilometres south of the Alberta mountain town as shifting winds threaten to fan the flames.

Government officials say at least 10,000 residents and visitors were forced to evacuate from Jasper National Park after a wildfire roared into the area late Monday night.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's decision to hand-pick a candidate for a riding in an upcoming Montreal byelection isn't being well-received by three aspiring contenders who spent months campaigning only to be shunted aside.

The Liberals announced Montreal city Coun. Laura Palestini last week as the party's candidate in a byelection whose date has yet to be announced for the riding of LaSalle—Émard—Verdun.

Three aspiring candidates - local school commissioner Lori Morrison; entrepreneur Christopher Baenninger; and former Quebec Liberal party organizer Eddy Kara - denounced the decision, with Morrison calling it "anti-democratic, 100 per cent."

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston says his absence from this year's Halifax Pride parade was the result of advice from the RCMP not to participate because of safety concerns.

The premier says he was not at the parade on Saturday "out of an abundance of caution" and that the decision to skip the event doesn't diminish his support for the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

In a normal world you wouldn't have to find excuses not to go to a Pride parade.

The alleged incident occurred when French authorities in Saint-Etienne, France, detained a support staffer for Canada Soccer after New Zealand, nicknamed the Football Ferns, lodged an official complaint to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). New Zealand claims the staffer recorded their practice with a drone.

🪖New Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship out of action because of flooding, mechanical problems

HMCS Max Bernays, one of the new Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS), is now in Pearl Harbor as specialists try to figure out how long it will take to be repaired.

National Defence spokesperson Kened Sadiku confirmed HMCS Max Bernays had to return to Pearl Harbor on July 12 due to mechanical issues and seawater flooding into one of the areas of the vessel. Technicians discovered that there were problems with a pumping and cooling system.

The Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships also can’t perform emergency towing, as was required in the original contract, and some cranes on the vessels are inoperable, National Defence officials confirmed. Other problems, such as contaminated fuel and issues with systems to launch lifeboats, are also being examined or fixed.

📊Sixty per cent of Canadians say Canada is admitting too many immigrants

Canadians are growing increasingly uneasy with the number of new immigrants coming to the country, with three out of five people saying there are “too many,” the highest rate of dissatisfaction with Canada’s immigration policies in decades, according to a new poll.

Sixty per cent of Canadian adults surveyed in the July poll said Canada accepts too many newcomers, a 10-percentage-point increase in the number who shared that sentiment in February.

Toronto building had to tell its residents to stop throwing feces at electrical workers

Many Torontonians are appalled after learning that some residents at a St. James Town apartment building were throwing feces at electrical contractors working to restore power to some units.

A letter about the incident was sent to residents at 77 Howard St. last week and was shared on Reddit. According to the building’s management company, Wellesley-Parliament Square (WPSQ), electrical contractors were there to restore power to some units following rain storm.

The management team says it has hired additional security staff for the protection of its workers and has informed Toronto police of the situation.

The former chair of a green tech fund violated the Conflict of Interest Act by failing to recuse herself from funding decisions related to companies she was associated with, the federal ethics commissioner says.

Annette Verschuren broke the rules when she participated in decisions to give the company she led $217,000 in pandemic relief money, and when she did not remove herself on several occasions where companies she was associated with were granted funding.

A majority of Canadians consider themselves overtaxed by a federal government that spends too much and unwisely. And Quebecers are the ones who most feel the Trudeau government is “investing” too much.

An Ipsos-MEI poll shows that 63 per cent of Canadians think the federal government’s spending is either “too high” or “much too high,” which is a sharp increase compared to a similar poll ran by Ipsos last year. They also feel the government isn’t transparent or accountable enough for the spending spree.
