Public Safety Minister David McGuinty says he has been given no assurances yet that Canada can avoid tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump, despite the federal government’s latest measures to address border security and drug trafficking.

I haven’t heard that personally, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop. We’re going to continue implementing.

Organized crime cartel activity is “very prevalent now” compared to at least a decade ago, says a former national security advisor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

A recent Criminal Intelligence Service Canada report said organized crime groups involved in manufacturing fentanyl operate mostly in British Columbia and Ontario. Beyond those provinces, crime groups engage in distribution and trafficking, and increasingly rely on street gangs and outlaw motorcycle gangs, the report said.

While cocaine remains the most common drug market for organized crime groups in Canada, the report found involvement in fentanyl has increased by 42 per cent since 2019.

Canada looks to shift intelligence sharing from U.S. as Washington diverges on foreign affairs

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly says Ottawa wants to deepen intelligence sharing with European partners, as longtime ally Washington diverges from Canada on issues like Ukraine.

In order to protect our interests and protect our people, we need to be able to understand what is going on in the world, and more than ever we need to have a strong security partnership with the U.K. and other European allies.

She said Ottawa is particularly concerned by the U.S. voting against Canada and its allies Monday on a United Nations resolution that blamed Russia for invading Ukraine and voiced concern for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

I say Canada should be our 51st state. No tariffs, no nothing. We give them military protection. They're about last in NATO. They say, 'why should they spend on military, the U.S. protects us.' That's true, we protect Canada. It's not fair. They couldn't exist if they had to pay their way.
