🇧🇩💸 Canada gives $272M in aid to Bangladesh, Indo-Pacific as USAID shuttered

Canada’s Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussen, unveiled $272.1 million in new funding on Sunday for foreign aid projects in Bangladesh and the Indo-Pacific region.

The money will fund 14 different projects in Bangladesh and other countries in the Indo-Pacific region.

🏦 Bank of Canada expected to cut interest rate again as trade war with U.S. disrupts economy

The Bank of Canada is widely expected to cut interest rates for a seventh consecutive time on Wednesday.

At its last rate announcement in January, the central bank lowered its benchmark rate by a quarter-percentage point, to 3 per cent, as insurance against the possibility of a trade war.

In the current circumstances, traders and analysts expect the bank to focus more on the risk of a recession than the rise in imported goods prices as Ottawa retaliates with its own tariffs and the Canadian dollar depreciates.

After the Liberal Party boasted in January of signing up nearly 400,000 registered Liberals, only about 38 per cent of them made it through the verification process and turned out to vote in the race that elected Mark Carney as the party’s new leader and Canada’s next prime minister.

The party said 163,836 people successfully went through the authentication process. Of those, 151,899 voted in the race, or 93 per cent, which is the percentage the party is using for turnout.

🇺🇸🛢Canada could restrict its oil exports to U.S. if Trump trade war escalates

Canada could impose non-tariff measures such as restricting its oil exports to the United States or levying export duties on products if a trade dispute with the U.S. escalates further, Canada’s energy minister Jonathan Wilkinson said on Tuesday.

When we are talking about non-tariff retaliation, it could be about restricting supply, it could be putting our own export duties on products. It could be energy and minerals, it could be broader than that.

He also raised the possibility of using non-tariff measures on critical minerals, which could force the U.S. to rely even more heavily on China.
