🇺🇸 Trump administration blames Canada, specifically Vancouver, for role in U.S. drug crisis

Officials in United States President Donald Trump’s cabinet continue to blame the northern border, and specifically Vancouver, for fentanyl entering the U.S.

Director of the FBI, Kash Patel, appeared on Fox News on Sunday saying that despite Trump sealing the border, fentanyl is still coming into the U.S.

Where are all the narco traffickers going to keep bringing this stuff into the country? The northern border. Our adversaries have partnered up with the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) and others, Russia, Iran, on a variety of different criminal enterprises, and they’re going and they are sailing around Vancouver and coming in by air.

🏠 Ontario struggles to meet housing targets

Ontario is facing significant challenges in meeting its goal of building 1.5 million new homes by 2031.

The latest budget projects housing starts of 71,800 in 2025, 74,800 in 2026, and 82,500 in 2027—levels that are far below the required pace. Only 260,000 homes have been started since the target was set, necessitating a doubling of construction, which experts view as unrealistic.

Critics argue that the budget's measures are insufficient to address the crisis, and skepticism about the government's commitment is growing.

Manitoba ethics commissioner faults former premier for pushing mining project

A report by Manitoba’s ethics commissioner says former premier Heather Stefanson and two of her cabinet ministers acted improperly by pushing for the approval of a silica sand mining project.

The report says Stefanson, then-deputy premier Cliff Cullen and then-economic development minister Jeff Wharton tried to get approval for the Sio Silica project after the Tories lost the 2023 election, but before the new NDP government was to be sworn in.

Ethics commissioner Jeffrey Schnoor says their actions violated the Conflict of Interest Act and contravened a long-standing parliamentary principle that forbids outgoing governments from making major decisions in most cases.

🇺🇸 Trump’s new bill threatens major tax increases for Canadian companies

U.S. President Donald Trump‘s new tax bill is threatening to significantly hike rates for Canadian corporations and could cost investors holding U.S. securities up to $81-billion in additional taxes over seven years.

On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Republican legislation, noscriptd the One, Big, Beautiful Bill, with a narrow vote of 215-214. If it becomes law, it will override the Canadian-U.S. tax treaty that has been in place since 1942.

The 1,100-page document includes section 899, a tax proposal created as a retaliatory measure against what the U.S calls “discriminatory or unfair taxes” of foreign countries, including Canada’s digital services tax (DST), which was introduced in 2024.

B.C. could face huge challenges if Alberta declares independence

Ports in B.C. rely on railways, pipelines and highways that cross Alberta to move goods to and from the rest of the country, and there could be enormous challenges if these routes are disrupted.

Premier David Eby has been reluctant to weigh in so far on the possibility of a sovereign Alberta, outside of comments calling for national unity in the face of Trump’s 51st state threats.

It’s really unfortunate that at this moment when Western Canada is stepping into the spotlight that there’s any discussion at all about leaving Canada.
