🤝🛢Alberta, Ontario premiers want 'several' oil pipelines built under Carney government

The premiers of Alberta and Ontario both said at a meeting Monday that they are cautiously optimistic that Prime Minister Mark Carney will successfully get a new oil pipeline built in Canada. But Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said the planning should not be limited to just one.

Meeting with her Ontario counterpart in Calgary, Smith said Alberta crude oil should have access to a “growing share” of pipelines.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he agrees on the need for several pipelines to create more wealth, saying he has been “promoting building pipelines west, east, north and south.”

💰Trump says he will impose 50% tariff on copper

U.S. President Donald Trump said he will announce a 50 per cent tax on imported copper on Tuesday — adding to the growing list of punishing tariffs that are causing economic dislocation in Canada and around the world.

Canada is a major exporter of copper to the U.S. — American data suggest it's the second-largest foreign supplier after Chile — and a 50 per cent tariff will make it more expensive for U.S. importers to bring in the metal.

🚨 Ontario faces mass layoffs of nearly 10,000 college faculty and staff due to program cancellations

Ontario is experiencing one of its largest mass layoffs, with nearly 10,000 college faculty and staff losing their jobs. These cuts are attributed to a federal cap on international student visas, which caused a 48% drop in enrollment and led to the suspension or cancellation of over 600 programs, including nursing, culinary arts, and environmental technology.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) criticizes the provincial government for chronic underfunding, warning of long-term impacts on workforce development.

Several First Nations in Ontario are calling for the resignation of Environment Minister Todd McCarthy after he opposed the reintroduction of federal Bill C-61, legislation aimed at guaranteeing clean drinking water rights for Indigenous communities.

🇺🇸 Manitoba premier shoots back at U.S. lawmakers over smoke complaint

Manitoba's premier shot back on Thursday at six U.S. lawmakers who recently complained about Canadian wildfire smoke travelling south, which they said was making it difficult for some Americans to enjoy their summer.

I've shaken the hands of American firefighters in northern Manitoba who are helping us out. I would challenge these ambulance chasers in the U.S. Congress to go and do the same, and to hear how much the American firefighting heroes who are here — how much they love our province.

said Premier Wab Kinew.

🇺🇸 Canada needs a U.S. trade deal but shouldn't have set a negotiation deadline, says Poilievre

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says Canada urgently needs to land a trade deal with the United States but it should not have set a deadline for negotiations because U.S. President Donald Trump "will try to take advantage" of the time crunch.

The challenge with a unilateral, self-imposed deadline is that it tells the counterparty that they have you on a clock — a clock that only applies to you. I personally think it would have been better not to show that up front to the Americans because we know that President Trump will try to take advantage of it.

🚨💊 Canada’s drug safety relies heavily on foreign inspections

Canada’s drug safety system is significantly dependent on foreign regulators, particularly the U.S. FDA, which conducts 70% of inspections for drug manufacturing sites supplying medications to Canadians.

Health Canada handles only 15% of inspections, leaving 85% to international agencies. However, the FDA faces staff shortages and pandemic-related backlogs, with about 2,000 drug plants overdue for inspection, heightening worries about drug quality and patient safety.

Recent incidents, like contaminated eye drops from India causing deaths and blindness, underscore the risks of weak oversight.
