Government spent nearly $400K on hotels for Queen's funeral, including $6K/night suite
Canada's delegation to the Sept. 19 funeral included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Governor General Mary Simon, former prime ministers Kim Campbell, Jean Chrétien, Paul Martin and Stephen Harper, Olympian Mark Tewksbury and actor Sandra Oh.
The Canadian government has not disclosed who stayed in the $6,000 suite at the exclusive Corinthia London hotel which, according to the hotel’s website, includes a butler service and views of the River Thames.
The hotel costs were obtained through an access to information request filed with Global Affairs Canada. They show a total of $356,981.70 was spent at the Corinthia London hotel between Sept. 11 and 20.
The federal government also spent a much smaller sum of $40,861.11 to put others up at the more modest Hampton by Hilton near London’s Stanstead airport.

Under current Canadian law, which was passed in 2016, a person must be at least 18 years old to be legally euthanized.

Google making ‘terrible mistake’ in blocking Canadian news: Trudeau
PM Justin Trudeau criticized Google on Friday for blocking some Canadians’ access to news content in search results in response to Bill C-18, the proposed legislation that would force Google to share revenues with news publishers.
🔹Earlier this week, The Canadian Press reported that Google was blocking news stories from showing up in some people’s search results and in its “discover” feature on Android devices. The company said the tests affected fewer than four per cent of Canadian users and would last about five weeks. “We’re briefly testing potential product responses to Bill C-18 that impact a very small percentage of Canadian users,” a company spokesperson said.
“It really surprises me that Google has decided that they’d rather prevent Canadians from accessing news than actually paying journalists for the work they do,” - Trudeau said.
Trudeau made the unprompted comments at the end of a press conference, without being asked about it. He told reporters there was “another issue that I just wanted to make mention of that is bothering me.”

Manitoba RCMP has beef with woman who called 911 to complain about long Burger King lineup
The Manitoba RCMP are reminding the public that 911 is only for emergencies after a Steinbach woman called to complain about a long drive-thru line at the new Burger King.
Police took to Twitter to condemn the non-emergency call that came in the day before:
❗️"We realize you aren't you when you're hangry, but this is not a valid reason to dial 911."
Another person recently called Manitoba RCMP to inquire about where they could find a Zamboni that weekend, another example of a call that shouldn't be made to 911.

🇹🇷🇸🇾Canada will fast-track immigration applications from quake-hit areas of Turkey, Syria
The federal government announced that it will fast-track visa applications of those in the earthquake-hit areas of Turkey and Syria.
According to the immigration department, up to 16,000 Turkish and Syrian applications were already in the system as of Feb. 8.
Approximately 1,700 of these applications (750 permanent residency and 920 temporary residency applications) were within the zone impacted by the earthquakes.
Fast-tracking will only apply to applications of individuals affected by the earthquakes, by moving them to the front of the queue. It’s too soon to say how many will ultimately get accepted.

Legault apologizes to Newfoundlanders for 'bad' Churchill Falls hydro deal
Quebec Premier François Legault said on Friday that he understands the “frustration and the anger” of Newfoundlanders over the Churchill Falls hydroelectric deal signed with Quebec in 1969.
The Churchill Falls agreement allows Hydro-Québec 85 per cent of the power generated by the Labrador dam for a mere two cents per kilowatt hour.
💵Legault said Quebec is ready to pay more for power from Churchill Falls — and do so before 2041 — in exchange for a “very advantageous price” for electricity once the agreement expires in 18 years.

🚫Canada bans TikTok from government devices
The government has banned TikTok from all of its phones and other devices, citing concerns about data protection.
TikTok, whose parent company ByteDance is Chinese, has faced increasing scrutiny in recent months over fears about how much access Beijing has to user data.
Effective tomorrow, "the TikTok application will be removed from government-issued mobile devices. Users of these devices will also be blocked from downloading the application in the future," the government said in a statement.
The European Commission banned the app from its equipment last week, following similar moves in the United States.

🇨🇦🇨🇳Trudeau warns journalists that questions about China's election interference are racist and should stop
Trudeau had been asked several questions about allegations of election interference by the Chinese government.
🔻Among the questions Trudeau didn’t give a clear answer on was whether CSIS had warned the Liberal Party in 2019 that they had concerns that now Liberal MP Han Dong had received support from the Chinese consulate in Toronto.
“There are 1.7 million Canadians who proudly trace their origins back to China. Those Canadians should always be welcomed as full Canadians and encouraged to stand for office. I want to make everyone understand fully: Han Dong is an outstanding member of our team, and suggestions that he is somehow not loyal to Canada should not be entertained.” Trudeau said.
🔻While Trudeau claimed that Han Dong is undoubtedly loyal to Canada, he did not comment on the specific allegation that the Chinese government helped Han Dong win the election.

🏦The Canadian economy stayed flat in the fourth quarter following five consecutive quarters of growth
Statistics Canada says real gross domestic product was unchanged in the last three months of 2022, despite higher household and government spending as well as a stronger trade position for Canada.
The report shows a much grimmer economy than forecasters had anticipated as higher interest rates take a more noticeable toll on the economy.
In December, the economy contracted by 0.1 per cent as goods-producing industries declined.
However, a preliminary estimate from Statistics Canada suggests the economy bounced back in January with 0.3 per cent growth in real GDP.

🇨🇦🇨🇳Canadian imports from China hit $100B in 2022, setting new trade record
Recent events involving the Chinese spy balloon incident, election interference, TikTok ban and the general worsening of Canada-China relations will probably not stay in the way of business.
💰 Trade between China and Canada hit record levels in 2022, with imports breaking the $100-billion mark for the first time, which is a 16 per cent increase from 2021.
The biggest category of imports in 2022 was consumer goods, at $31 billion, followed by electronic and electrical equipment, worth $28 billion.
The data show Canadian exports to China also reached a historic high of $27.9 billion, recovering from a slump that followed the 2018 arrest of Chinese Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou and China’s detention of Canadians Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig.
China last year lifted a three-year ban on Canadian canola that had been imposed after the arrest of Meng, who has since returned to China.

B.C. firm gets approval from Health Canada to make and sell cocaine
🔹Adastra Labs in Langley, B.C., said in a statement that on Feb. 17 Health Canada granted a cannabis company the right to possess, produce, sell and distribute cocaine.
B.C. Premier David Eby commented on the news: "If Heath Canada did in fact do this, they did it not only without engaging with the province, but they did it without notice to us."
"It is not part of our provincial plan," he added, referring to the ongoing effort to stem the overdose death rate.
🔹Health Canada clarified that the company can only sell to other licence holders who have cocaine listed on their licence, namely pharmacists, practitioners, hospitals, or the holder of an exemption for research purposes.
Adastra Labs said in the statement the amended licence allows the company to "interact" with up to 250 grams of cocaine and to import coca leaves in order to make and synthesize the substance.
🔹Opposition leader Kevin Falcon criticized the move: "Cocaine isn't prescribed, it isn't safe, and this is wrong,. Commercializing cocaine as a business opportunity amounts to legalizing cocaine trafficking, full stop."
