tl;dr: there's an embargoed security bug impacting almost anything, and it requires hardware changes to be resolved, with software mitigations having as much as 50% overhead. The code for the mitigations in the linux kernel has rather cryptic comments, and newer windows builds have them from as early as nov 2017.
