i'm actually sitting here fighting with a freshman about a math problem so y'all help me out and do it by hand (don't use a calculator)...
6÷2(1+2)
6÷2(1+2)
The problem here is mostly how people perceive the scope of the division operator; the order of operations dictates that division and multiplication have equal precedence, and so they should be executed in order. It usually helps to write division as n/m => n * (1/m) to help you understand why this is the case:
6 * (1/2) * (1+2)
6 * (1/2) * (1+2)
FYI, none of you are technically wrong. It depends on how you parse the order of operations, which is intentionally misleading.
