I feel like this is a natural consequence of evolution. As time passes, the system gets optimized to where it is funnier, but takes less effort. The joke itself is built on references to other memes, and the effort to come up with a joke is minimized to basically just (mis)using a meme template, or, in some cases, combining meme templates.
We're trying to maximize the effort to humor ratio, and we're at the point where we found that memes without any sort of content can still carry humor. See: my previous post
