Ruan Xiaohuan is a Chinese dissident, blogger, and InfoSec specialist. In 2009, Ruan started a blog named ProgramThink on Blogger, covering various topics from network security, methods to bypass the internet blockade in mainland China, to his own political views and critics of the Chinese Communist Party and the government. He was captured on 10 May 2021, and then formally arrested on 17 June 2021, for ‘inciting subversion of state power’.

The case is due for a second-instance trial on May 22, but the Chinese government has prevented his family from appointing a lawyer for him. His wife would like people to pay more attention to the case.

Windows XP activation has been cracked.

Microsoft's algorithm for verifying Windows XP product keys has been cracked, meaning that it will be possible to generate valid Windows XP activation codes without an internet connection, even if Microsoft has already shut down the XP activation servers.

Microsoft has long stopped supporting Windows XP and does not recommend that users reinstall Windows XP in 2023. However, if you have a need, such as running special software that only works on XP, then the closure of the activation server will no longer be a major obstacle.

Why does Russia look bigger than Africa on a map?

The Mercator projection, the most popular world map, distorts the size of the shape of landmasses near the pole. This results in Russia looking bigger than Africa. Actually Africa can nearly fit two Russias. In fact, Africa has an area of 11.73 million square miles while Russian one is only 6.6 million square miles.

One can refer to the image above to get the exact sizes of countries compared to what we are used to on a map.
