Adelie penguins ( Pygoscelis adeliae ) are one of 17 penguin species, significantly smaller than the prominent king and emperor penguins. They weigh only about five kilos and look a bit like chicks even as adults. Male and female, as is common among penguins, take care of raising the young together and build a nest of stones together. She lays the eggs inside, and he incubates them. Meanwhile, she goes in search of food and returns only when the hatched young need to be fed. To catch enough fish, small crustaceans and squid for this, the birds often have to swim more than 100 kilometers.

The Adelie penguins also build their typical stone nests on Ross Island off the Antarctic mainland. But the material is difficult to obtain in the barren landscape. However, a high stone nest offers great advantages for the survival of the young. Because as soon as it thaws, the ground in the bird colonies turns into stinking mud. On the stone piles, however, eggs and chicks stay dry.

The search is arduous, and many stones have to be laboriously picked out of the ice. Researchers have observed that some female penguins make this work a little easier for themselves. They waddle to bachelors and mate with them. In return, the single males give them some stones, which the females use to return to their permanent mate. A single female was observed acquiring 62 stones through such sex transactions. So it is a clear case of prostitution out of necessity. It is not out of greed or even sexual wantonness that the females are doing it for money, but to ensure the survival of their young. A tricky case for moral theologians.
