Still lifes by the French artist Henri Fantin-Latour (1836 - 1904)
The artist did not paint just flowers standing in vases - for each of them he found a suitable vessel (glass beaker, crystal glass, wicker basket).
French writer Emile Zola gave an assessment of the still lifes of Fantin-Latour:
Mr. Fantin-Latour's canvases do not catch your eye and do not call out to you from the walls. To penetrate them, you have to look at them long and carefully. Then their simple truth will come to you - and you will return to them.
