The CSU has always preferred Berlin to stay out of Bavarian affairs. In the face of Corona and sometimes hesitant state leaders, however, unusual tones were suddenly heard from Munich.
"First of all, we need a kind of grandfather clause for Länder competences. There must be no further encroachment on state competencies by the federal government. (...) Federalism is being eroded, and that puts a strain on cooperation." (2019)
"I could have imagined more federal competencies via the Infection Protection Act, which also forces the states to follow clear rules. I'm very much in favor of that and open." (2021)
