World music genius Richard Wagner wrote about this Opera in a letter to his brother: I used all my power to create this.

Wagner chose the date of the first performance of the Opera in 28 August 1850 because it coincided with the birthday of "Wolfgang Goethe" the poet who was born a century ago. The performance of this opera was headed by Franz liszt, who was always Wagner's close friend and main supporter.
