Yes SAS really sucks! It’s suck is so powerful that I’d refer from a job opportunity if it is used as a standard tool.
The syntax is outdated and not intuitive at all. Making functions in SAS is an extreme pain and the GUI makes you feel 30 years older. The syntax is very unique SAS, e.i. learning to program in SAS does not necessarily make it easier to learn e.g. R, Python and TensorFlow afterwards.
Most importantly, it does not have the capabilities that the more modern open source softwares offer, and you are forced to buy several licenses for different versions if you’d like to have all the inferior expensive capabilities SAS can offer.
All of the arguments backing up the use of SAS, except for the tech support, do not hold up. The tech support in SAS is actually very good.
In short,I believe that any data scientist with respect for him/herself will avoid SAS like the plague. Be advised!
PS: I wouldn’t mind SAS that much if it was free because then we could just let it die it’s somewhat honorable dinosaur death in peace. But the company tries to infest large corporations like a cancer, thus becoming a dishonorable living dead and a meer shadow of what it once was.
