Money quote: "In his book How We Talk, he examines how conversational minutiae—filler words like “um” and “mm-hmm,” and pauses that are longer than 200 milliseconds—grease the wheels of this machine. In fact, he argues, these little “traffic signals” to some degree define human communication. What all human languages have in common, and what sets our communication apart from animals, is our ability to use language to coordinate how we use language."

Money quote: “So it can indeed be shown that there are severe limitations to our visual imagination. Why? It is likely that visual imagery-capacity limits arise somewhere in the visual-imagery brain network, which spans frontal and posterior visual areas of the brain. The frontal areas are thought to be responsible for the control and creation of visual imagery through top-down connections that feed into the sensory (in this case, visual) areas of the brain. These top-down connections are proposed to manipulate the firing rate, or synaptic connections, of the neurons in visual areas of the brain leading to the experience of visual imagery. We can think of these top-down manipulations as creating ‘maps’ of the images that we imagine in the visual areas of our brain. When we imagine multiple images, we create multiple maps, and these maps compete for space in the brain’s visual areas. This competition and interaction between imagery maps is, perhaps, what gives rise to our capacity limits”

Money quote: "Un segreto ben mantenuto.

Money quote: "The test may take several months and Facebook has no current (!) plan to roll this out beyond six test countries (Slovakia, Sri Lanka, Serbia, Bolivia, Guatemala and Cambodia). After a few weeks there are still several bugs — some people don’t have Explore Feed, but Page posts disappeared from their News Feed. So they can’t follow pages they like.

Money quote: "Uncle Paul, Uncle Pav, my mother's bachelor brother, the dearest man in the whole world, was responsible (for our musical childhood). He gave the first piano to Nadia, and he was the one who had the patience and the interest to teach me. He wasn't a musician himself, but he saw some kind of talent, so he taught me to read music, and when I came to the (St. Petersburg) Conservatory, at the age of three, I didn't yet play the violin. I had absolute pitch, and I played some four-hand pieces with Nadia and a few by myself. There was a newspaper article about it, calling me a "phenomenal child", and according to the paper, I apparently said that I really didn't like the piano so much, I preferred the violin. Well, all my Uncle Paul had to know was that I wanted a violin, and he gave me an instrument. And it wasn't a toy, he bought me a real, little quarter-size violin, which is in my closet to this day (1992), and on which several years later I went so far as to play the Mendelssohn Concerto."
