Money quote: "We're building an artificial intelligence-powered dystopia, one click at a time, says techno-sociologist Zeynep Tufekci. In an eye-opening talk, she details how the same algorithms companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon use to get you to click on ads are also used to organize your access to political and social information. And the machines aren't even the real threat. What we need to understand is how the powerful might use AI to control us -- and what we can do in response."

Money quote: "One in 11 Americans pays an average of $91.14 per month to use self-storage, finding a place for the material overflow of the American dream. According to SpareFoot, a company that tracks the self-storage industry, the United States boasts more than 50,000 facilities and roughly 2.311 billion square feet of rentable space. In other words, the volume of self-storage units in the country could fill the Hoover Dam with old clothing, skis, and keepsakes more than 26 times."
Money quote2: "Though the adage “sex sells” is hard to dispute, the decidedly unsexy self-storage industry made $32.7 billion in 2016, according to Bloomberg, nearly three times Hollywood’s box office gross."

Money quote: "Clutter, like Satan, can assume many forms. It can present as a once-used bread machine or Lego hair that’s come unsnapped from its person. It can look like Tupperware without its assigned top, garden tools when there’s no garden, expired coupons, a bottle of hardened glue, a mushy basketball that will never again bounce."

Most businesses fail in their first year. Yet here we are, one of the largest open-source communities ever assembled, collectively building software that will run on millions of computers around the world. To know that your work was meaningful, and that a vibrant community of people will continue building upon it…. can any founder ask for anything more?"

Money quote: “But for a lot of heterosexual couples, the proposal—as movies portray it, as many millennial women have internalized it—doesn’t reflect the kind of modern, egalitarian relationships many women want today. Whom to marry is among the most important decisions most people will ever make in their lives, and yet it’s not a choice made in the course of a conversation—the normal way two grown humans make big life decisions. Instead, it has to be a show, with a prefixed grand finale: “yes.””

Money quote: "The only question that remained was when to launch the new service? This is the first consumer product Cloudflare has ever launched, so we wanted to reach a wider audience. At the same time, we're geeks at heart. 1.1.1.1 has 4 1s. So it seemed clear that 4/1 (April 1st) was the date we needed to launch it."
Sto provando a usarlo. Pare andare molto veloce. Siamo appena all'inizio, vi saprò dire.
Money quote2: "We talked to the APNIC team about how we wanted to create a privacy-first, extremely fast DNS system. They thought it was a laudable goal. We offered Cloudflare's network to receive and study the garbage traffic in exchange for being able to offer a DNS resolver on the memorable IPs. And, with that, 1.1.1.1 was born."

Money quote: “One way not to reach that cap is to drink plenty of water and have healthy snacks. It may be tempting to grab a soda, coffee or alcohol, but they’ll dehydrate you and make you tired. Likewise, as fun as it is to grab a pizza and game all night, you’re better off with healthy snacks. Streamer Ellohime, who built his channel on 24 hour marathon streams, recommends fruit, nuts, or yogurt to keep you energized. You might not be planning on going for a full 24 hours, but if you stay hydrated and snack healthfully, you’ll probably lower your chances of waking up in a pile of crumbs as I have definitely done in the past.”

This would help us deliver that kind of experience, and make building on our work easier in the future. To that end, we decided to make a new frontend in the form of a single page style React app, decoupled from its WordPress backend. Among other benefits, this ended the need for full page loads every time you want to read something new, opening up a new world of interaction possibilities, and for a reading experience where articles could increasingly relate to each other and to the broader context in which they emerge.”

Money quote: "On desktop, it’s not just the hardware that should adapt with an attached keyboard, but the software also should change to best fit the usage. To achieve this, iOS (and Android) should also have a desktop mode and it should be optimised for keyboard and mouse interactions. It’s little more than just responsive design. The moment the keyboard is attached, the entire system should change to, maybe not macOS, but something in the middle."
