Money quote: "Across the technology industry, rank-and-file employees are demanding greater insight into how their companies are deploying the technology that they built. At Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Salesforce, as well as at tech start-ups, engineers and technologists are increasingly asking whether the products they are working on are being used for surveillance in places like China or for military projects in the United States or elsewhere.
That’s a change from the past, when Silicon Valley workers typically developed products with little questioning about the social costs. It is also a sign of how some tech companies, which grew by serving consumers and businesses, are expanding more into government work. And the shift coincides with concerns in Silicon Valley about the Trump administration’s policies and the larger role of technology in government."

Money quote: "Who needs writing, anyway? Seen through the filter of a military analogy, writing might be like nuclear weapons (which were developed specifically by the military), or it might be like gunpowder, which was discovered by alchemists searching for life-prolonging substances hundreds of years before its use in weapons. The question is this: is writing the product of the state in every single stage of its evolution, invented de novo by administrative elites? Or is it composed of pre-existing representational practices that expanded to fill the needs of the state and complex society?"

Money quote: "Fireworks, hypnotic and sublime, are used to celebrate national independence around the globe, as signs of sovereignty or political autonomy. They are the window dressing of the modern state. The exploding rainbows are a tribute to the bloody wars that made the celebration possible. They are a reminder that—under that same sky and upon that same land to which the ashes float—we are kinfolk.
There is exactly one European thinker who could be considered the “philosopher of the firework”: Friedrich Nietzsche. “I am dynamite!” Nietzsche wrote in Ecce Homo. Dynamite, from dunamis, meaning power. Nietzsche, more than any other contemporary thinker, grappled with the draw and the danger of a fiery blaze."

Money quote: "At the time of my writing this, I probably average an output of somewhere in the ballpark of 10,000 words per day.
However, over the past 4 years, I can confidently say that I have averaged 3,000 words per day, minimum. If I’m not writing here for Inc, I am writing on Quora. If I’m not writing on Quora, I’m working on my next book. When I’m not working on my next book, I’m ghostwriting for someone else. Even before I had my own agency and I was working 9–5, I would still cram in 2–3 hours of writing every single night.
Writing is my craft, and I treat it like a sport (I grew up playing hockey)."
Money quote2: "I remember reading a book a while back about writing output, and the author suggested aiming for 500 words per day.
“500 words?” I thought, almost insulted.
“I write 500 words on my phone while I’m waiting in line to ring up my groceries.”
When I tell people how much I write, most don’t believe me. They insist I’ve done the math wrong — which is fair, seeing as I failed math in high school and went to art school instead. But no, I got this equation right: 3,000 words per day is a minimum for me."

Esperti no, appassionatamente curiosi sì.

“First Man – Il primo uomo”, la mia recensione per Fumettologica

Money quote: "Even if Stalinism and McCarthyism are disregarded, however, more and more Americans were becoming aware of just how 'big' the government was getting; how high taxes were; how increasingly rules and regulations permeated business and even ordinary life; how information concerning every facet of private life was entering the files not only of government bureaux but of private credit systems.
1984, therefore, came to stand not for Stalinism, or even for dictatorship in general - but merely for government. Even governmental paternalism seemed '1984ish' and the catch phrase 'Big Brother is watching you' came to mean everything that was too big for the individual to control.
It was not only big government and big business that was a symptom of 1984
but big science, big labour, big anything."

E soprattutto in posti come New York. Dopodiché, pensare a chi soffre di fobie legate agli ambienti chiusi o in movimento verticale, diventa davvero intrigante.
Money quote: "Once—during a time in my life when the phobia’s grip happened to be particularly weak—I got in the elevator with my fellow commuters at the 168th Street subway station in Washington Heights to head down to the subterranean 1 train platform. It was a foreboding specimen of an elevator, stainless steel and poorly lit. And then it didn’t move. Five seconds. Ten seconds. Nothing. I panicked. “We’re stuck!” I shouted, and began pacing the small space, staring at the ground, trying to ignore my heart spiking out of my rib cage. Then a fellow passenger noticed an important detail—no one had actually pressed the “down” button. We made it to the platform soon after. But it was too late: the phobia had rushed back in, at full strength. And for years after, I was back to avoiding every elevator I possibly could. "
