Money quote: “In the last 24 hours, three students have taken their lives, taking the toll to 19 in Telangana in the span of one week. According to the parents, what has caused this tragedy is an error on the part of the software solutions firm, Globarena Technologies Private Limited, which had been engaged by the intermediate board in September 2017 for development of software to process admissions, pre-examination, post-examination results, including OMR (optical mark recognition) scanning.”

Seguo da tempo e con occhio pigro un settore del quale vorrei a un certo punto occuparmi meglio: i modelli di collaborazione e i relativi strumenti. JIRA è uno di questi, nel mondo software, e non privo di problemi.

Money quote: “One thing that writing elegant software has in common with art: its crafters should remain cognizant of the overall macro vision of the project at the same time they are working on its smallest micro details. JIRA, alas, implicitly teaches everyone to ignore the larger vision while focusing on details. There is no whole. At best there is an “Epic” — but the whole point of an Epic is to be decomposed into smaller pieces to be worked on independently. JIRA encourages the disintegration of the macro vision.”

Me lo diceva anche il poeta residente Roberto R. Corsi pochi giorni fa: meno news e più libri. Le news fanno male. Che dite, chiudiamo il canale?

Money quote: "Perhaps it’s time we realize that consuming more news about the world around us is not the way to improve it (or ourselves), personally or politically. Two thousand years ago, Marcus Aurelius wrote in his Meditations, “Are you distracted by breaking news? Then take some leisure time to learn something good, and stop bouncing around.”"

(Ps: la parte su Marco Aurelio che ragiona dell'information overload mi fa impazzire. Gli americani sono proprio dei giuggioloni...)

Morte per selfie. La storia, anzi le storie.

Money quote: "Wu’s death, after all, is only the latest in a string of selfie-related fatalities. Termed “killfies” by some social media researchers, these accidental deaths have involved social media personalities and, of course, adventurers. Canadian rapper Jon James McMurray perished last October after crawling out onto the wing of a Cessna while filming a music video. Last October also witnessed the much-publicized deaths of travel bloggers Meenakshi Moorthy and Vishnu Viswanath, who apparently fell while taking a selfie at Yosemite’s Taft Point, a popular rock outcrop with an 800-foot drop. A month prior, Tomar Frankfurter, an 18-year-old from Jerusalem, also fell to his death in the park while reportedly taking a selfie at Nevada Fall. Last July, three stars of High on Life, a popular YouTube thrill-seeking adventure travel show, plummeted to their deaths at a waterfall near Squamish, British Columbia. And in late March, a man from Macau fell 1,000 feet to his death while attempting to take a selfie on the rim at Grand Canyon West."

Il tenente Colombo, Peter Falk e l'Ungheria

Money quote: "So why is his statue in Budapest? It turns out Falk was rumored to be related to the 19th-century Hungarian writer and political figure Miksa Falk. While it’s clear the actor’s family had Hungarian roots, his connection to Miksa Falk has never been entirely proven. Even so, the Columbo statue was installed on Falk Miksa Street in 2014. The statue, in the context of a city that takes its statuary quite seriously, reflects a desire to preserve and celebrate native Hungarian culture following decades of political turmoil and foreign influence."

La storia di Pearl Harbour, in foto.

Money quote: " In this Dec. 15, 1941 file photo, Ruth Lee, a hostess at a Chinese restaurant, flies a Chinese flag so she isn’t mistaken for Japanese when she sunbathes on her days off in Miami, in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Lee was born in the U.S."
