Money quote: "Globalisation is thought to have its beginnings in the 16th century when the Spanish silver dollar went transcontinental. Its acceptance as common currency arose when Spanish navigators in the Philippines established a circular shipping route, known as the tornaviaje, between Asia and the Americas. More than 250 years of uninterrupted trade ensued between Asia and the rest of the world. And the ships playing this route were known as China Ships"

Money quote: "China blocked Wikipedia in April, using DNS injections to prevent its citizens from accessing the encyclopedia. There has been no official statement as to why the website was blocked. In May 2017, China put forth plans for making its own encyclopedia with over 300,000 articles from 20,000 scholars. Other countries such as Turkey, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela have also blocked access to Wikipedia in the past."

Money quote: "Here’s how to achieve digital minimalism on the internet:
- Know Your Time Wasters: use Time Tracker to figure where you spend most of your web browsing. Knowing the time-wasters is the first step
- Unfollow & Unfriend: if it doesn’t interest, entertain, or inform you anymore it’s time to go. Our feeds are full of distracting posts from people we’re not particularly close to. Unfriend anyone that doesn’t add value to your life
- Delete Social Media: no sense using all the platforms available. Keep only the ones that you love. If you want to go hardcore, delete your profiles (here’s how to remove Facebook). To be less extreme simply de-activate your account
- No Bookmark Bar: next time you want to browse Reddit you’ll have to manually type it
- Review Your Reading: stop browsing websites that do not contribute to your life. Removing an option by default is the quickest way to change behavior
- Block Websites: blacklist websites that aren’t essential for work. In Mac use
- SelfControl; in Windows Cold Turkey; in Chrome StayFocusd; in Firefox use LeechBlock"

Money quote: "Billions of transistors, attached to green plastic, soldered by robots into a microscopic Kowloon Walled City of absolute technology that we call a phone, even though it is to the rotary phone as humans are to amoebas. It falls out of my hand at night as I drift to sleep, and when I wake up it is nestled into my back, alarm vibrating, small and warm like a twitching baby possum."

Money quote: “The evolutionary geneticist Mark Thomas at University College London has dismissed ancestry testing as ‘genetic astrology’, but it could be as useful to think of it as genetic gossip: a rumoured past that, like most rumours, is at least partly true. It begins with a test-tube of spit and ends with fractional estimates: a story, whispered by an algorithm, in the language of information.”

"Little Bobby tables" mi fa morire...

Money quote: “How many people watched the show’s most recent episode? 12.6 million live viewers.

How many people watched the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones the same week? 12.5 million.”

Money quote: "This picture (which was at the center of the controversy) can only be a panorama and not a single exposure. To be able to capture the whole span of the southern hemisphere Milky Way setting, you would need a fisheye lens that would distort the foreground. In this image, a specific warping mode was used during the stitching process, creating a bent Milky Way instead. However, what is most noticeable about the picture is the Milky Way itself. While its position and curvature are definitely possible at the location it was taken (Botswana), its overall shape and look is irrefutably unnatural. Some parts of the Milky Way were quite obviously cloned several times, perhaps to make it look more impressive."

Money quote: "“I came to the counterintuitive conclusion that engaging in risk is actually very important in preventing injuries,” a researcher says."
