Perché no?

Money quote: "Everyone has childhood dreams. Mine was to make a game for my first console: the Nintendo Game Boy. Today, I fulfilled this dream, by releasing my first Game Boy game on a actual cartridge: Sheep It Up!

In this article, I'll present the tools I used, and some pitfalls a newcomer like me had to overcome to make this project a reality!"

Money quote: "Ancient Romans loved it, Australian law protects it, and modern epicures travel across continents to taste it. Ligurian honey is as sweet as it is rare. Native to the Italian Alps, where they were famous for their productivity and docile natures, purebred Ligurian bees have been eliminated from their homeland as a result of interbreeding and disease. Now, it’s believed that the only remaining purebred population of Ligurians lives on Kangaroo Island, a sunny island about 10 miles off the southern coast of Australia. The entire island has been a bee sanctuary, perhaps the world’s first, since a group of Ligurian queen bees was let loose there in the 1880s"

Money quote: "In the 1890s, New York was a city with a fever. The slip of island between the Hudson and East River was plush with cash. It poured in from shipyards, freight trains, and factories. It flooded the Manhattan streets. Carriages bounced, crowds pressed, electricity glittered. From Pittsburgh and Omaha, Secaucus and Cincinnati, young women flocked to the city, hoping to make it under the newly electrified lights of the Broadway stage. They ended up modeling for the burgeoning print advertisement industry or working in the chorus line, the factory line, or the line of sex workers on the streets."

Violenza e disperazione nelle toilette

Money quote: "Public bathrooms offer three primary options to dry a pair of wet hands. First, there is the venerable crisp-pleated paper towel. Second, the old-style warm-air dryer: those indestructible metal carapaces that, through their snouts, breathe down upon our hands. And finally, the jet dryer sub-species of the sort Dyson makes, whose gale-force winds promise to shear away every drop of moisture rather than slowly evaporating it. In the quest to dominate the world’s restrooms, Campbell discovered, Dryer v Towel is a pitched contest of business strategy and public relations. “Expect to be lied to a lot,” Campbell told me. “It’s almost like the cola wars. You have Pepsi v Coke, and you have hand dryers v paper towels.”"

Money quote: "Prior to European arrival, surfing was a communal activity on the islands for men, women and children of all social classes. Stories about the mythical Maui Princess Kelea describe her as one of the best surfers in the Hawaiian kingdom. The demi-god Mamala is depicted as a half-woman, half-shark who rode the waves. The oldest known papa he’e nalu, or surfboard, dates to the 1600s and comes from Princess Kaneamuna’s burial cave in Ho’okena on the Big Island, according to the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center in San Clemente."

Cosa succede quando avviate il vostro Mac? Ecco una infografica che lo racconta

Money quote: "The sequence starts at the top, with user inputs in green at the left, processes in pink next, actions etc. to the right of the centre, and interactions in blue at the right. Key sources of data are shown in red. Macs equipped with T2 processors are rather different: their main differences are shown in boxes with heavy black outlines."

Illuminatevi.

Money quote: “In later years, as I found myself building and managing software teams, I've realized that there were probably a dozen programmers on that ancient project who knew why the system was so slow and how to fix it. They knew, but they kept it to themselves because in that organization, there were some things that were more important than making the system better. In the future, “stay the Hell out of other people's code” assumes there will be a future. But the best way to have a future is to be part of a team that values progress over politics, ideas over territory and initiative over decorum.”

Money quote: “I updated the site regularly and obsessively for about three months, and then never returned to it. The site was embarrassing then and is embarrassing now, but abandoning it was a terrible mistake.

When I stopped updating my website, I didn’t stop posting online. I just found other places to do it”
