Money quote: "Instagram launched IGTV in 2018, and is pushing creators to explore what’s possible for mobile video. Netflix introduced vertical 30-second previews, and is now experimenting with mobile-first features like vibrating movies. Spotify is releasing vertical music videos. Snap is delivering plenty of premium mobile video content with its Snap Originals, and has more on the way."

Money quote: "Vertical dramas are what Chinese producers call their noscripted content made especially for vertical mobile play."

A quanto pare la Lego va davvero forte in Cina. È una azienda che sa ascoltare.

Money quote: "Lego has also astutely catered to local tastes. This year the firm launched three sets specifically for China, the first time it has done so for any country. Fans were delighted at the attention to cultural detail. One was a Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner kit, with tiny red envelopes and chunlian, lucky couplets on banners pasted around doorways. A dragon boat race set included a sticky-rice dumpling, a popular festival snack. The high-quality kits are pricey, costing up to 700 yuan ($100) apiece."

Money quote: "In the room where NASA stores the samples that Apollo astronauts brought to Earth decades ago, I peer at rocks and trays of dirt through glass. But my tour guides are firm: Nobody touches the moon rocks."

(lettura lunga)

Money quote: "Drones have come to define the United States’ forever war, the so-called war on terror. The expansion of drone systems developed by the military into new territories — including the continental United States — embodies this era’s hyper-paranoid ethos: new threats are ever imminent, conflict is always without resolution. At the same time, non-militarized drones have entered civilian life in a number of ways, from breathtaking cinematography to flight control at Heathrow airport. There are many avid documenters of this new technology, but no one seems to understand its many facets quite like Arthur Holland Michel, founder and co-director of the Bard Center for the Study of the Drone, which catalogs the growing use of drones around the world. Now, Holland Michel has written Eyes in the Sky: The Secret Rise of Gorgon Stare and How It Will Watch Us All, a book of startling revelations about drone surveillance in the United States."

Money quote: “For a 2014 Cochrane review, Deery and colleagues analyzed roughly 50 studies that compared powered and manual toothbrushes in terms of their ability to prevent plaque buildup and gingivitis, which is the first stage of gum disease. “At three months, powered brushes reduced plaque levels by 21% and gingivitis by 11% compared to manual brushes,” he says. “This suggests that in the long term there will be less gum disease and decay if you use a powered brush.””

Money quote: “Now take a look at what it’s like to cover the event in person as an invited journalist, which is always a privilege.”

Preferisco coltivare i miei sogni.

Money quote: “Nutube, similar to a conventional vacuum tube, has an anode grid filament structure, and operates exactly as a triode vacuum tube. Also similar to a vacuum tube, it creates the same characteristic rich overtones. By applying their vacuum fluorescent display technology, Noritake Itron Corp., a Noritake Co. Ltd affiliated company, have devised a structure which achieves substantial power saving, miniaturization, and quality improvements when compared with a conventional vacuum tube.”
